Off

Monday, June 13th, 2005

I had an off weekend. Last Friday was the aforementioned tire ‘splosion, which, the more I think about it, was completely and utterly my fault. And I’m pretty sure I just butchered every rule of grammar in the preceding sentence. Anyway, it turns out that not only will I have to replace all 4 tires (the remaining 3 were too worn), I also have to replace the rim (which won’t be in until Thursday), and they won’t know if there’s suspension damage until they get the new tire on Thursday. I’m an idiot.

On Saturday the cable guy came to install my cable, but he couldn’t get it working. He kept saying it was my TV, but I kept arguing with him that it wasn’t my TV, and played some stuff from the VCR to prove the cable coax input was working. He said someone would call on Sunday to come back and try to get it working, but nobody called. I had to call them this morning and reschedule for Thursday morning.

On Sunday I exchanged my TV, and fortunately this one seems to be working fine.

Throughout the weekend I was having strange dreams which left me feeling really uneasy. I don’t even remember what they were about, but I awoke feeling disturbed every morning. Strange.

Besides those things, I actually did have a pretty good weekend. Friday night I saw Star Wars again with Peter (at a DLP theater! It’s pretty neat; you can actually see the difference with digital projection. Although Peter pointed out that the added clarity also makes it possible to count the pores on Natalie Portman’s face.)

Saturday I went on our weekly run, and then went to Ikea with Peter where I picked up some stuff for my new place. Saturday evening I saw Saving Face with Babs, Florence, and May Ling. It was good. Joan Chen was a really good Chinese Mom.

Sunday I went to the Farmer’s Market, did some cleaning, and then went to Costco and Target to get yet more stuff for my apartment. Later that night I saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which was entertaining. Beautiful people and guns. It’s a winning combination.

This morning I attempted to sign up for DSL service (ironically, I have to do it online) and discovered that I had to either sign up for automatic bill pay or make a $200 advance payment on my account to do so. So I signed up for automatic bill pay and I still couldn’t order DSL, so I called back and it apparently takes 48-72 hours for the information to propogate through the system, so I’ll have to wait until later in the week to sign up.

Work is and will be stressful for a while. I hope I don’t explode.

Vader

Poll: When Darth Vader is breathing, does it go: inhale then exhale, or exhale then inhale? I say definitely inhale first.

A sound clip for your reference.

Sub-poll: If you had to put Darth Vader’s breathing in print, how would you spell it?

Please advise.

Nerd Week 2K5

Monday, May 23rd, 2005

Last week was chock full of nerdly activities. Before I get into that, I should say that Bay to Breakers was lots of fun. I placed 8556th. Woo! That means I had my name printed in a special edition of the San Francisco Examiner. I’ve ordered it already.

Now on to the nerdiness. As most of you know, I was in LA last week for E3. It was my first E3 so I was pretty excited about it. Rahul and Yar and I flew down Wednesday morning, met up with Corey at the Convention Center, and spent most of the rest of the day at the expo. First impressions? Loud noises and flashing lights. For someone with self-diagnosed ADD, it was a dream come true. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all had huge booths, but Microsoft was the only one that had their next-gen stuff on the floor. There was a 3-hour wait to see the PS3 and a 2-hour wait just to see the next Zelda (on current-gen), so we skipped out on that.

It was disappointingly difficult to get good swag. You either had to win it, or stand in line for hours. I did get a cute Monkey Ball stuffed monkey, but I kinda stole it. Yar and I had heard about the stuffed monkeys, so we headed to the Sega booth to check it out. Just as we got there, we saw a lady with a box full of them walking across the floor. I reached in and grabbed one for Yar, and she didn’t seem to notice. Then I reached in and grabbed another one for myself, unsubtley smacking her arm in the process. She turned to me and told me, “Oh, those are for the people in line. But you guys can keep them anyway.” It was definitely one of my most Asian Mom moments.

There were some cool looking games like DOA4, Soul Calibur 3, etc., but Yar and I completely agree that by far the Best in Show was: Nintendogs. He and I stood in line for about 15 minutes to play it, and decided that it was the only game that gave us that “I-must-have-it” feeling. SOOOO cute.

Earlier in the day, while we were waiting to board the plane in San Jose, I ran into Ted, a guy from work. I was chatting with him and mentioned that I had heard he was going to see Star Wars that night at midnight. He said that he might have a few extra tickets, and lo and behold, later that day he called to tell me that he had 4 extra tickets. So after E3, Yar, Rahul, Corey and I headed to Universal Studios City Walk for dinner and the movie. We got there around 7pm, and there was alread a significant line. For the midnight showing. After a nice dinner at Tony Roma’s (“America’s Best Ribs! Except not.”) we went to the theater, got our tickets from Ted, and discovered that they had already let the line in. So we headed into the theater for a couple hours of napping, talking, and watching lightsaber fights. The movie was….okay. I shan’t say more at this time, but if you’d like to discuss it here, feel free.

While at E3, and while waiting around for Star Wars, I had a revelation. I’ve always thought I was pretty damn geeky (just ask Camila!) but what I’ve come to realize is that there is a huge spectrum of people WAY geekier (and incidentally, smellier) than I am. I don’t know if that makes me happy or sad. :) :(:):(

Edit: Forgot to mention that yesterday Babs and I went to an arts festival thingy in down town. The weather was beautiful. Later in the day, Yar, Maureen and I made cassoulet for dinner. I normally don’t like stuff with beans in it, but it was really good.

Finally, Happy Birthday Lisa! And a much belated Happy Birthday to Yar, Cheryl, and Buddy!

Nostrashamus, Revisited

Thursday, May 27th, 2004

So another television season has come and gone, and it is time to check the accuracy (or lack thereof) of my previous predictions.

All in all, boy do my predictions suck. Let’s get a breakdown:

Alias: I had predicted that Lauren would go good at the end, but that she would die, thus somehow preventing Vaughn and Syd from getting back together. Not only was I wrong on the first point (although they did play with the idea a bit,) but on the second point, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Though Lauren did die, and Vaughn did kill her, Syd and Vaughn didn’t just get back together, they actually made out while Vaughn was shooting Lauren. Seriously.

I was right about my secondary prediction of Sloane having a hidden motive, though. It was revealed that he and he daughter (who can solve complex equations in her head while in a drug-induced stupor) are running off to find the Rambaldi artifact together. For what purpose, who knows? Nobody cares about Rambaldi but the crack-smoking writers.

American Idol: Boy, I didn’t see that one coming. I predicted the top three to be George Huff, LaToya London, and Fantasia Barrino, in that order. Little did I know that George and LaToya would be voted off fairly early on. Crazy teenyboppers.

Again, though, I was right about John Stevens being painfully boring. :D

Friends: Finally one that I was spot-on about. Ross and Rachel did indeed ride off into the proverbial sunset.

Survivor: All-Stars: I’m pretty sure Rob didn’t win, but I think he came in second. Not bad for someone who’s never seen the show.

Star Wars: Episode III: This still remains to be seen, but I stand by my predictions.

The O.C.: A fairly odd season finale that ended with Ryan going back to Chino (i.e. “Da Ghetto”), Marissa going back to her alcoholic ways, and Seth sailing off to Tahiti in a very small, dangerous-looking boat. But we were still treated to Peter Gallagher’s fantasmic eyebrows, so it was all good. In the meantime, maybe I’ll check out North Shore, i.e. “The O.C., but in Hawaii.”

Nostrashamus

Wednesday, April 21st, 2004

Here are my predictions for various upcoming TV shows and movies. These are mostly here so that I can look back later and see if I was right. Please note that I am “spoiler-free”, as the cool kids say, so if you know something that I don’t know, please don’t say it here.

Alias: Lauren will have a change of heart towards the end, but will be killed (possibly by Vaughn,) leaving Vaughn guilt-ridden. This is what will prevent he and Sydney getting together right away in the next season.

Secondary prediction: Sloane has some sort of hidden motive (besides the whole daughter thing.) I’m still torn about the good-or-evil question, but I think he will eventually become evil again, although maybe not this season.

American Idol: George Huff will win, LaToya London will be runner-up, Fantasia Barrino will be third. I don’t think that George is necessarily a better singer, but I don’t think LaToya has the rabid fan base to make her win.

Secondary prediction: John Stevens will be painfully boring.

Friends: Ross and Rachel will end up together.

Survivor: All-Stars: Rob will win. Note: I’ve never actually watched Survivor: All-Stars, and thus am not 100% sure there is actually a contestant named Rob.

Star Wars: Episode III: The death of Amidala will tip Anakin over the edge to the Dark Side. I see two possible scenarios here. The first, and I think more interesting, possibility is that Anakin himself will kill Amidala, forcing Obi-Wan to fight him to stop the madness (in the Dark Side sort of way, not the Susan Powers sort of way.) The second possibility is that Amidala will be killed by someone else, and Anakin will blame Obi-Wan for Amidala’s death, leading to the show down which will produce the Sith Lord we all know and love.

Secondary prediction: Senator Palpatine is not Darth Sidious. Unless George Lucas thinks we are all idiots (which is a possibility, I admit,) I think it’s way too obvious that Palpatine and Sidious are the same person. I think there’s some sort of cloning action going on there.

Tertiary prediction: the movie will be full of poorly-done CG, wooden acting, and I will likely weep in sadness at its conclusion.

Edit:

The O.C.: Marissa will be a bad actor and look older than the rest of the cast, despite being the only true teenager on the show. Ryan will be dark and brooding and look like a young Russell Crowe. Seth will be dorky and annoying, and I will feel geeky when I recognize the names of all the comic book writers he talks about. Theresa will be in love with Ryan. Eddie will look like Satan. Sandy’s eyebrows will be magnificent. :D

Speaking of The O.C., did anyone find it kind of creepy last night that Summer took her dad’s opinion so seriously? “My dad is my best friend” isn’t a very good excuse. Also, I found it funny that Julie’s sister mentioned Julie getting botox, when clearly her swollen upper lip was partially paralyzed by the stuff.

I have now officially regressed to age 12.
