Karla Lemon

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I learned from the most recent Stanford Magazine that Karla Lemon, my conductor at Stanford, passed away a few months ago due to complications from a surgery. I know that some people had their differences with her, but I always liked her, and she actually made made me co-concertmaster as a freshman, including on our tour to Italy. I also realized that Karla was the last conductor I ever played under, which is personally significant, given how much I love playing in symphonies, and how much music used to dominate my life. With how few women conductors there are in the world, her loss is that much more significant. My thoughts go out to her friends and family.

Congratulations, Crystal and Peter!

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Yesterday Crystal and Peter were married at Memorial Church at Stanford. The ceremony was very sweet, and included a reading from a really cute childrens’ book called I Like You. Afterward we headed to the reception at The Garden Court Hotel in Palo Alto (and stopped to get Matt a hamburger on the way) for a night of food, fun, and dancing. I can’t believe Peter and Crystal are actually married now, because when I first got the save-the-date e-mail, I remember thinking how far away August was. But here we are, and I’m so happy for them. Congratulations!

(If you’re wondering why you have to use a guest pass, it’s just that I made a bunch of the pics private so that my Flickr stream isn’t flooded with wedding pics. Any more than it already is…)

Ever been employed by Stanford?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Might want to get a credit report. Apparently there was a laptop stolen that contained the personal info of a bunch of current and former Stanford employees.

Thanks to Peter for the heads up. Or was it really Peter??

I remember you!

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I went to my 5th-year college reunion class party on Saturday, and had a lot of fun. When I decided to attend, I was afraid that I would just spend the whole night hanging out with my normal friends, which would kind of make the night a bust (sorry, friends). But I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people I saw who fell into the “I forgot about you but am really glad to see you” category, and ended up staying until 1:30am. I even remembered everyone’s name, which was quite a feat for me.

On the way back, we were driving behind a clearly drunk driver on 101N. We called 911, and were promptly put on hold for a full 5 minutes, before a surly operator answered and hung up after about 10 seconds. The conversation in full:

“Hi, we’re on 101N, and the person in front of us is really drunk.”
“How do you know he’s drunk?”
“…He’s swerving all over the freeway.”
“Ok. *click*.”

Good thing we were only calling to tell them, “I’m driving behind a drunk driver” and not, say, “A crazed cannibalistic maniac is currently chewing off my foot, please send help.”

Besides reunion activities, the weekend was good, too. Amanda and I went on an urban hike to find a birthday present for my sister (it’s in the mail!), which took us around the sunset, as well as to The Haight. Sunday we made the awesome blueberry muffins again, and didn’t do too much else.

In other news, congrats to Buddy for placing second in the ABS bouldering competition last Saturday! I think next time a competition rolls around, I may compete in the recreational (i.e. wussy) division.

Commencement

Graduation2003-01.jpgToday was graduation day, and I officially got my Masters degree. The ceremony was nice, if not a little, okay a lot, long. It definitely didn’t have the craziness of last year’s graduation, but it was fun and I got to spend some time with good friends. Plus, the orange hood. It’s all about the orange hood. I am still disappointed, though, that our gowns were only rentals this year, as I could have done great things with that orange hood. Like…wear it….

After the ceremony my dad had to leave, but my mom and I went to my cousin’s house for dinner. In honor of my graduation, I actually got to sit at the adults’ table. This is a privilege usually reserved only for those who have kids of their own, but an exception was made for me today.

I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet that I am actually done with school. I’m not sure whether to feel sad, happy, excited, or nervous, so for now I’m sticking with slight optimism, which will slowly morph into panic in the coming weeks. I can’t wait.

So Honorable

Wednesday, June 11th, 2003

I am happy to announce that my and Darren’s 348b final project won an Honorable Mention for “Best Post-Production Processing.” I think they were referring to the 7-step rendering/compositing process we went through to produce our final image. Who knew I would get my only graphics-related prize in college for a huge hack? Anyway, I am now the proud new owner of an ILM hat for my efforts.

Mariel also bought me a spiffy new cordless keyboard (I think she was tired of banging the “R” key on my old keyboard) and I bought myself the Buffy season 4 DVDs. All in all a quite successful day.

I’ve also been reading a lot about sugar gliders because someone on su.market (our campus newgroup for buying/selling stuff) is giving a couple of them away. The idea of having a pet that will sleep in my pocket is very very appealing to me, but unfortunately they are illegal to keep in California. Stupid California.

Edit: Forgot to say that I am done with schoolwork FOREVER! Wooooo!

Pontookie

Finished final project: Rendering Realistic Night Skies.

So tired.

The word “pontookie” spontaneously popped into my head as I was coding. I Googled it, and it came up with no results, so I’m declaring that I’ve invented the word.

Pontookie!!!

Fly Me to the Moon

Sunday, June 8th, 2003

Nothing much has been happening lately since I’ve tried to buckle down and do some actual work.

I’m pretty pleased with the way our project is going, and hopefully we’ll be able to squeeze in a couple more features before the demo on Tuesday.

Without further ado, here are some cool pictures. Again, click on the thumbnail to get the full-size version.

Keep Watching the Skies

Saturday, May 31st, 2003

Hoover Tower in MayaFor those who are observant (or bored,) you might have noticed a link to the left to the assignment description of my CS348b final project. I thought some of you (and by “some of you” I mean Buddy) might be interested in what wacky hijinks I have planned for this final project. You can read about it in our project proposal, but the basic idea is that we want to render realistic night skies. We found a really neat paper by graphics god and former Stanford researcher Henrik Wann Jensen about rendering night skies. His system incorporates physical data about the the planets, sun, and moon to render incredible images of the night sky. I will be working with Darren on the project, and our final image will hopefully be a nicely-rendered full moon behind Hoover Tower. I’ve modeled a simple Hoover Tower in Maya, which will hopefully suffice. So keep an eye on this page for (hopefully) progress on this project.

I’m starting out by working on the atmospheric haze by simulating light transport through participating media. Woo.

Edit: For those of you not familiar with it, Hoover Tower is a tower on the Stanford Campus. Go here for some photographs of it.
