Up, Shinteki, and Fondue (Oh my!)

Monday, June 1st, 2009
up posterI saw Up in 3D last Friday, and loved it. Despite having pretty high expectations due to all the positive reviews (and the fact that it is a Pixar movie), I still thought it was amazing, not only because there are even more talking dogs than are shown in the trailer. I was surprised that there were actually a lot of adult themes in the movie, considering it’s relatively-mild PG rating. I won’t give anything away, but if the first few minutes don’t make you at least a little misty-eyed, you’re probably a robot. (In which case you may find this entry helpful.) Other exciting Pixar news was that they showed a teaser for Toy Story 3, which is apparently coming out next summer!

shintekiSaturday I nerded it up and participated in Shinteki Decathlon 5 with Matt, Peter, and Walter. Besides the fact that I didn’t realize it went until 10 pm, (and subsequently disappointed a few people…) I had a lot of fun. The game started in San Francisco (one of my favorite clues was inside the Exploratorium where we had to find a whole bunch of different exhibits and answer questions about them), went around the city a bit, went into the Marin headlands, and finished in San Rafael. We finished all 10 clues and took only 18 points in hints, and I even contributed some in a non-grinding way. Yay! I think we ended up placing somewhere in the middle of the 25-or-so team field, which I was happy with, especially considering 9 teams got perfect scores. As Walter put it, we’re near the top of the teams that suck. YES.

Sunday we went on an accidentally-too-long 8.5-mile training run, which was pretty rough, but we slogged through it. More importantly, we finally put the fondue pot YGB gave me to good use and had a fondue party! AllRecipes once-again came through with amazing cheese fondue and chocolate fondue recipes. I wasn’t involved with the making of the cheese fondue, so I can’t really comment on the recipe other than the fact that it was DERICIOUS, but if you decide to make the chocolate fondue, I took the advice of some of the commenters and used chocolate chips (half milk chocolate, half semi-sweet) instead of grated chocolate, and instead of instant coffee, about a third of a cup of brewed coffee, and it turned out great. The fondue pot performed like a champ and the glass insert was super easy to clean. Given how easy and delicious fondue is, I’m kicking myself for not doing it earlier.

10 tips for killer robots from the future

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Having watched Terminator: Salvation the other day and witness Skynet once again fail to kill John Connor, I came up with a list of 10 handy tips for our future robot overlords to help them enslave humanity.

(Spoiler warning. Look away if you haven’t seen the movie.)

  1. Call for backup. Yes, you are big robots, and you are very strong, but if you have John Connor, say, in your GIANT KILLER ROBOT FACTORY, why not send more than one robot after him? This is not a judgement about the killing skills of any single robot, it’s just practical.
  2. Stay away from open protocols like USB. When John Connor can hack your robot motorcycles with what looks like a futuristic T-Mobile Sidekick, you may want to rethink your hardware interfaces.
  3. Make your robot motorcycles less comfortable for humans to ride. Maybe try replacing the handlebars and seats with, I don’t know, BURNING HOT METAL SPIKES.
  4. Invest in firewalls. I know that McAfee probably doesn’t exist in 2018, but you’re a super smart computer network; I think you can figure it out. Again, if John Connor just needs to attach a couple alligator clips to some wires and text you “OVERRIDE” to get into your buildings, maybe it’s time to rethink.
  5. Program your killer robots to investigate suspicious-looking open doors with wires coming out of them. This one is pretty self-explanatory and related to #4.
  6. Define user permissions in your computer network. Yeah, so Marcus is a super-cool advanced prototype, but was it really necessary to give him the ability to turn off your main gun turrets…WITH HIS MIND??
  7. Listen to the radio. John Connor makes a broadcast every night on a signal that is apparently strong enough to hear worldwide, and able to be picked up on what appears to be a crystal radio. In this broadcast, he basically details all the plans of the resistance. Like, all of them. Just give it a whirl.
  8. If you see Kyle Reese or John Connor, kill them immediately. Like, right then and there. No waiting to upload data to Skynet or BS like that. Even if you’re essentially a flying metal frisbee, just CRASH INTO HIM! You’ll probably do some damage.
  9. Make more of those huge building-sized robots. They’re basically awesome and seem pretty indestructible. Just stomp around and see what happens.
  10. (Most important) Squish our heads. I’ll admit it: if I could, I’d probably throw people through walls, too. It seems really fun. But if you’re looking to kill someone with efficiency, remember that you’re a REALLY STRONG KILLER ROBOT and that our skulls, while relatively hard, can pretty easily be squished. One strong clap should do it.

Throw your hands in the air

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

C’mon, party people!

How was your Thanksgiving? I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 days off, especially because I hadn’t had more than 1 day off for about 2 months. Like my old calculus teacher used to say, “It’s like beating your head on the wall because it feels so good when you stop.” Hooray!

We had FriendsGiving at Yar/Jan/John’s place, and I was in charge of the turkey again. After this year, I’m pretty convinced the recipe is almost impossible to screw up, as we brined the turkey in a garbage bag, substituted some brine with soy sauce, and coated the turkey in the decidedly non-neutral olive oil, and it still turned out great. What wasn’t great, however, was when I spilled all the pumpkin pie filling all over the kitchen floor. Yay me.

The rest of my weekend was great — went on a hike, played some co-op Left 4 Dead, saw Quantum of Solace, got a lil’ tipsy on some Riesling (and no barfing!), and bought a bike! On Sunday night I rode to Yar’s house, (yes, a whole 0.9 miles away) and I thought my heart was going to explode. I’m out of shape.

Rampant consumerism

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

Okay, I guess it doesn’t really count as consumerism, but I bought carbon offsets for my car from TerraPass. On the one hand, it does feel a bit like cheating (the lazy man’s version of good environmental karma), but I figure it’s better than doing nothing, right? I have been carpooling for a few months now, but I still drive quite a bit, so I thought I’d try to do my small part.

I also purchased a Garmin Forerunner 405 today, which is a GPS-enabled watch. I’m trying my best not to fall out of running shape again, so I thought this could help with my training. I’ve signed up for the San Jose Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in October, and I’d like to try to beat my time again. Having the watch to be able to exactly track my pace and distance should be really beneficial for my training. Plus, it’s shiny and has buttons. Okay, it was mostly that.

Lastly, I finally saw Wall-E tonight, which I thought was very cute.

Shinteki

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I played Shinteki Decathlon 4 this past Saturday with Peter, Crystal, and Matt. It was my first Shinteki and only my 3rd or so puzzle hunt ever, so I was worried I’d just be dead weight. As it turns out, I was actually able to contribute (though there were definitely spans of me spacing out while everybody else worked), and I had a lot of fun. It was a 12 hour game, so I was pretty tired at the end of the day. I was even more tired because I hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before. Why, you ask, did I not get much sleep? Because of Lil’ Sack-Face, that’s why. I invited Yar and Rahul over on Friday to watch The Orphanage, and while it was good, it was definitely scary. So, dear readers, if I ever invite you over to watch a scary movie, tell me I’m stupid and try to talk me out of it, please.

On Sunday, Buddy and I met a friend at Ti Couz for brunch (mmm…crepes), and I did some housework until it was time to meet people at Cafe Mums for all-you-can-eat shabu shabu. Mmmm…. So basically, I was a big fatty. What did you do?

I am Iron Man

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Actually, I’m slightly iron deficient. But I did see Iron Man over the weekend with Rahul and Buddy, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Robert Downey Jr. really carried the movie well, and the vfx were really nice. I didn’t think it was the second coming of Jesus in movie form like some people, but it’s definitely worth seeing.

I’ve been thinking about launching an official photography/portfolio site, and I’m sort of against the idea (at least for now) of paying somebody else lots of $$$ to put together the site for me, so I’ve been looking into a couple scripts to present my photos in a non-crappy way. I found a nice one called Lightbox that uses Javascript, so I wrote some php code to go through a directory of images and set up the lightbox links for them. I think it might load too slowly to be practical, but you can check out my test here. There’s also a flash-based one called SimpleViewer that looks nice. I figure if I actually want to try to start booking some real gigs, I should have a nice site to point people to.

Happy Birthday, Amanda!

Happy 29th Birthday, Amanda!

(-2 days)

Had another nice weekend. Saturday I took Stinky McEnzo to the self-service doggy bath, and he came out moderately less stinky, and about twice as fluffy. Later in the day I went to the mall with Yar, Jan, and Rahul (how very high school of us), where we all had a very productive shopping day. Afterwards, we watched The Host, which I thought was awesome. Yar and I both appreciated the rapid switches in tone. In one minute, it is pure slapstick comedy, and in the next, it is telling the story of a man trying to make up for being a failure of a father. But mostly it’s just great Asian cinema weirdness, which I highly enjoyed.

Sunday we took a hike at Mount Tamalpais, which was really beautiful. The day was so clear that we could actually see the Inner Sunset from the mountain, which was pretty cool. Afterwards was Japanese food and chocolate cake in Berkeley, which was yummy.

In a completely unrelated note, I’ve been getting a lot of Spanish language songs on my iPod when I play it on shuffle. I guess that’s what I get for always downloading the “Canción de la Semana” on iTunes…

Accents

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

People I was surprised to find out have accents

  • Hugh Laurie, aka Dr. Gregory House in House M.D.. What? The gruff-yet-lovable doctor with unorthodox ways is a Brit? No way.
  • Jamie Bamber, aka Apollo on Battlestar Galactica. This one really took me by surprise. We were watching some Battlestar DVD special features, and out comes Apollo’s bangers-and-mash accent. It was surreal.

People I was surprised to find out don’t have accents

  • Gwyneth Paltrow, aka Viola in Shakespeare in Love. They made fun of this on SNL once, but it’s true that she somehow got big playing British people.
  • Uma Thurman. This one’s a little weird. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her have a British accent in a movie, but my brain is convinced that she’s British. Don’t ask me why.

People I was not surprised to find out have accents

  • Clive Owen, aka Dwight in Sin City. I spent most of the movie trying to figure out what accent he was supposed to have, when I realized it was just his poor attempt at flattening out his British accent.

People I was not surprised to find out don’t have accents

  • Kevin Costner, aka Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. At some points in the movie, he gives it the old college try, but at other times, his accent flounders or down right disappears. The sad thing is that you know what was put in the movie were actually the best takes of all, and that makes me wonder what they left on the cutting room floor. Maybe he was talking with an Indian or Chinese accent or something.

People who I was surprised to find out have accents, but then was surprised again when I saw them later and they didn’t have their accents and now just confuse me

  • Mel Gibson. I thought he was American for a long time, then I saw him in Gallipoli and learned he was apparently Australian, or at least grew up there, and I saw some interviews where he had an Australian accent. But I just looked up a recent interview on YouTube, and now his accent’s gone. Then again, he’s also crazy.

Super Bowl Weekend

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Had a nice relaxing weekend. Friday night we finally watched The Simpson’s Movie, which was good, but not best evar, which is about what I expected. Saturday we were thinking of going to the Japanese Tea Gardens in the park, but given the crappy weather, we decided to check out the de Young museum instead. For dinner we had Little Star, which was delicious as always, and watched Knocked Up, which I enjoyed quite a bit. It was especially novel because I got it on pay-per-view, which, at $4.99 was a bit more expensive than a normal DVD rental, but definitely beat going to the video store in the pouring rain.

On Sunday I played a lot of Hotel Dusk, which is pretty fun, but I think relies a little too much on the crappy adventure game mechanic of being able to pick up/do/see/talk to certain things only after hitting some arbitrary trigger. I also watched some of the Super Bowl, but equal amounts of the Puppy Bowl. I’ll let you decide which I liked more.

For dinner Sunday night, we made corn and squash soup (much better than it sounds) and awesome biscuits. Mmmm…so buttery…

Heart Walk 2007

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

As with past years, I am participating in the San Mateo County Heart Walk this year. If you wish to donate to me, my donation page is here. Thanks!

In other heart-related news, I saw Stardust last night with Buddy, Rahul, and Eric (the heart reference makes sense if you’ve seen the movie, I swear). We all thought the movie was really fun and overall well-done. Thumbs up.
