iTunes or Amazon?

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

The new Green Day album came out this week, and I wanted to buy it online since I’ve all but given up on CDs. I buy a lot of my music on iTunes, but every so often I’d buy from Amazon since they are in mp3 format, and (until recently) they were the only source of DRM-free music. Plus, they tend to be a bit cheaper. However, in this case, the playing field was basically even: iTunes has converted their entire library to DRM-free, and price is now not an issue.

iTunes had 2 versions of the album: a ‘deluxe’ version for $14.99, and the regular version for $11.99. The deluxe version had 2 bonus iTunes-exclusive track, while the regular version just had the album. The Amazon version had a the full album plus a different Amazon-exclusive bonus track, also for $11.99. I spent an embarrassingly long time trying to choose between the two before somewhat arbitrarily settling on Amazon, mostly because I don’t really like the idea of Apple having a monopoly on digital music purchases, but in the end, I don’t really care all that much.

When you buy music online, what do you use: iTunes or Amazon? Neither? Both?

Music

Friday, February 27th, 2009

After finishing my latest audiobook, I was trying to think about other ways I could avoid the radio during my commute, so I decided to start listening to my iPod again. Now, I have somewhat of a…problem with acquiring a lot of music, so much so that I often hear songs come up on my iPod that I completely don’t recognize.

Now, I’m probably the last person in the world to hear about this feature, but in iTunes (and on your iPod), you can create Smart Playlists, where you can write rules about what kinds of songs should be included in the playlist. So I just created a smart playlist on my iPod that includes only songs with Play Counts of 0. And…it’s over 3000 items. In my defense, I don’t sync my iPod with my computer, so a good chunk of the songs I’ve listened to before, just not on my iPod. But that’s still pretty bad. I’m also taking the opportunity to delete all the crappy songs that I don’t like anymore, and rate the ones I do.

Edit: In completely unrelated news, I just checked, and I will be maxed-out on PTO (again) in two weeks. Sigh.

Apple AirPort Express not so express

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

The install, anyway. Amanda’s been thinking of ditching all of her CDs and having her music strictly digital, so to enable this, I went out and bought an AirPort Express so that we can stream our music from iTunes to our stereo. 4 hours and a lot of frustration later, I finally had the soft strains of Shakira coming out of our speaker system. The key step seemed to be that I needed to prefix our wireless network’s WEP key with “$” to let the AirPort Express know that it was in hex. The weird thing is, on Amanda’s laptop, where I initially configured the AirPort Express, for a while the system tray icon showing the wireless network status would always say that it was disconnected, even though it wasn’t. This problem persisted between reboots and then later started working again, so who knows what happened there.

Now that we can both stream music wirelessly, I’m in the process of deleting a bunch of crap from my computer to make room for all of my mp3s, which I had moved onto an external drive a couple of months ago.

I also picked up a Griffin iTrip FM transmitter so that I can play my audiobooks stored on my iPod on my car stereo. Sweet!

DNC Speeches

Wednesday, August 4th, 2004

For those interested, the major speeches from the Democratic National Convention are available on iTunes for free download. (That is an iTunes link; if you have iTunes installed, clicking the link will open it up and bring you to the right download page.) Yay iTunes!

Like Lilly, I’m also curious about whether iTunes will be doing the same thing with the Republican National Convention speeches when the time comes. Although that would certainly be the fair thing to do, I wouldn’t shed any tears if they didn’t. :D

Free Moosic

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

I was excited to find out that in honor of their 1-year anniversary, iTunes is giving away 1 free song a day for this whole week. What I was not so excited about was that getting the free singles requires you to upgrade your version of iTunes. You all may or may not know that I am very much resistant to what I perceive as unnecessary upgrades; I’m very much a “if it ain’t broke” sort of person when it comes to software. I guess it’s possible the software had to be upgraded to allow $0.00 purchaces, but I’m worried that I’ve somehow accidentally sold my soul to Apple. Because you know nobody ever reads those Terms of Service agreements…

Well, if I show up one day with an Apple logo tattooed on my forehead, you’ll know what happened.

There was one thing that I was pleased about, though: iTunes lists Avril Lavigne under “Pop”. Go iTunes!
