Music

Friday, February 27th, 2009

After finishing my latest audiobook, I was trying to think about other ways I could avoid the radio during my commute, so I decided to start listening to my iPod again. Now, I have somewhat of a…problem with acquiring a lot of music, so much so that I often hear songs come up on my iPod that I completely don’t recognize.

Now, I’m probably the last person in the world to hear about this feature, but in iTunes (and on your iPod), you can create Smart Playlists, where you can write rules about what kinds of songs should be included in the playlist. So I just created a smart playlist on my iPod that includes only songs with Play Counts of 0. And…it’s over 3000 items. In my defense, I don’t sync my iPod with my computer, so a good chunk of the songs I’ve listened to before, just not on my iPod. But that’s still pretty bad. I’m also taking the opportunity to delete all the crappy songs that I don’t like anymore, and rate the ones I do.

Edit: In completely unrelated news, I just checked, and I will be maxed-out on PTO (again) in two weeks. Sigh.

A letter to my iPod

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Dear iPod,

You are so cute and shiny, and I can listen to podcasts on you, and even watch TV shows. I can also play Peggle on you. When I dropped you on the asphalt on Judah Street, you did not break, and barely scratched. I like this a lot.

But there are a few things, iPod, that I do not like. For one, why was your interface designed by retarded monkeys? Why, when I just want to shuffle all the songs from a particular artist, do I first need to go to the “Settings” menu and set Shuffle to “Songs”, then find that artist in my library, hold down the center button to add the songs to a “On the go” playlist, and then find that playlist and play it?

And while I’m on the topic of shuffling, why is it that your “Shuffle Songs” feature is so very non-random? Why do I always hear so many Avril Lavigne songs, but only have about 25 Avril Lavigne songs in my collection of 4000+ songs? Did Avril pay Apple millions of dollars to bias your shuffling algorithm towards her songs? More importantly, why do I have so many Avril Lavigne songs?

iPod, I like you so much, but every day when I listen to you on shuffle on the way to work, and you play me 9 Fort Minor songs in a row, it hurts me. Please try to change.

Love,
Sha Sha

Das Wochenende

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

Friday night Rahul, Yar, and Maureen came over to my apartment to hang out. Chillax, if you will. First I had the distinct pleasure of watching the tape of a very small and very cute young Yar win Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Do it Rockapella!! Afterwards, we watched The Neverending Story, the latest in our series of 80s movies that somehow passed Yar by. I enjoyed it despite the constant running commentary from Yar and Rahul.

Saturday morning I had a good Dish run with Buddy, Florence, and May Ling, followed by lunch at the Creamery. That night was a party at Matt’s place.

Sunday evening I playtested Bang 12, which was fun, but I revealed myself as mostly useless in solving the puzzles. But I ate Skittles like a pro.

I’ve been rockclimbing pretty regularly with peeps from work, so I bought my own shoes and harness last week. It’s a lot of fun, but my arms are pretty dead today.

The other exciting occurance of last week is that I finally broke down and got an iPod. It’s a black 4GB iPod Nano (review coming later). On the back I had engraved:

ShaPod Nano:
Now with 50% Less Sha!

This has elicited mostly stunned “Really??” reactions from people, which I didn’t expect. I’m not sure why people find it so surprising that I actually got that engraved, but maybe that’s because I live inside my head, and have learned to know what to expect.

I’ve been listening to a lot of NPR podcasts on my iPod, and I’ve enjoyed them a lot, but I’ve also come to understand why people might hate NPR. It’s kind of amazing how pretentious one can sound just reading the day’s news.

Finally: The other day I glanced at the movie poster for 50 Cent’s new movie Get Rich or Die Tryin’ on the Apple movie trailers website, but I misread the title as “Getrich Dietrin” and thought it was some new indie German flick.

iPod Whore

Sunday, September 5th, 2004

I will be the first to admit that I am drawn to shiny things with buttons. And what is shinier and buttony-er than an iPod? Nothing, I tell you, nothing.

So Buddy showed me this site: FreeiPods.com (yes, there’s a referral number in there; see title: “iPod Whore”) which will give you a free iPod, albeit with a bit of work from you and 5 friends who owe you favors and/or money.

The deal is that you sign up for an account at the FreeIPods.com site, then sign up for one of several “offers”, which include things like an AOL trial, BMG CD clubs, Columbia DVD clubs, stamps.com, etc. (I signed up for the stamps.com trial. Most people seem to sign up for AOL, then cancel their account well before the 40 or 50 day trial is over.) After that, you have to get 5 of your friends to sign up at FreeIPods.com and complete 5 offers themselves. Once those 5 referrals are complete (i.e. they not only signed up for a FreeIpods.com account, but they sign up for one of the “offers”), I gets my shiny button-y goodness.

Sounds pretty scam-y doesn’t it? Well it’s apparently not, according to this Wired.com article, as well as many other online sources such as this one.

Apparently this makes economic sense because a great number of people will a) never get the required 5 referrals and/or b) not cancel their trials. So each of those people = cash money for both the company who runs FreeIPods.com and the companies making the offers.

So….if any of you would like to help me get my little bundle of digital happiness, feel free to sign up here. Don’t make me beg.
