Happy December!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

How was your Thanksgiving? I had a great Thanksgiving dinner at Naomi’s parents’ house and we were even able to bring Little Bear! She had a good time running around and pooping and peeing where she wasn’t supposed to… Friday we went on a picnic/walk at Inspiration Point in Berkeley which was really nice until it started pouring rain, and then it was still pretty nice, just very wet. The decision to not bring rain jackets was not a wise one. Saturday morning, Domi and Larry came over for brunch, and then I joined them at the Dickens Fair which was…interesting. There were lots of crafts and stuff, but the more fascinating part were the number of people who not only came in costume, but were also in-character the entire time. For example, at one point Larry sneezed, and a woman in costume told him “Bless you.” Then she turned to her companion and remarked that he might have The Plague. All with a British accent, of course. Later we met Yar, Jan, and Cliff for dinner at Mandalay, and I ate waaaay too much, which was pretty much the theme of the weekend. Sunday I went to a Crab Party at Helen’s house where she and Walter got a ridiculous amount of food from The Boiling Crab, which was delicious. Peter and Crystal also brought Duncan/Indy and I brought Little Bear, so she had her first playdate! At first she was a little scared of Duncan, but after we let them off leash they played really well together. It was basically a cute asplosion. You can see pics here.

Other than Thanksgiving break funtimes, not too much is going on. Little Bear has basically been taking up most of my time and energy, as expected. I enrolled her in a Puppy Kindergarten class which hopefully will help her be less crazy, and we’re taking her to a Puppy Playgroup on Sunday, which I’m looking forward to. Puppies everywhere!

Merry Xmas!

Thursday, December 25th, 2008

Merry Christmas, everyone! It’s certainly been a year full of hardship and loss, but also full of hope and joy. Doing my best to focus on the good times, and wishing everyone a wonderful holiday season!

Oh, and I will try to get pics up from Puerto Rico ASAP.

Throw your hands in the air

C’mon, party people!

How was your Thanksgiving? I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 days off, especially because I hadn’t had more than 1 day off for about 2 months. Like my old calculus teacher used to say, “It’s like beating your head on the wall because it feels so good when you stop.” Hooray!

We had FriendsGiving at Yar/Jan/John’s place, and I was in charge of the turkey again. After this year, I’m pretty convinced the recipe is almost impossible to screw up, as we brined the turkey in a garbage bag, substituted some brine with soy sauce, and coated the turkey in the decidedly non-neutral olive oil, and it still turned out great. What wasn’t great, however, was when I spilled all the pumpkin pie filling all over the kitchen floor. Yay me.

The rest of my weekend was great — went on a hike, played some co-op Left 4 Dead, saw Quantum of Solace, got a lil’ tipsy on some Riesling (and no barfing!), and bought a bike! On Sunday night I rode to Yar’s house, (yes, a whole 0.9 miles away) and I thought my heart was going to explode. I’m out of shape.

This is a title

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

I’m feeling lazy about titles at the moment.

How was your Labor Day? Mine was blissfully free of labor. Had a couple dinners with friends, and not one, but two barbecues. Basically the best weekend ever. Also went on a 6 mile run, which went all right. I’m trying to do a long run (6 or more miles) every weekend from now on. So far, I’m 1/1. Go me.

I’ve been working more on my photo website (no, it’s not up yet, so don’t go a-lookin’ for it), which has been fun but also obsession-inducing. I stayed up until 1:30 am the other day making sure my blog validated on w3.org. Yes, I’m a nerd. I also installed photo cart software so people can buy prints, which is pretty cool.

Today I met up with Cliff and Andy for lunch, and we ended up going to Yank Sing for dim sum. The food was good, (though not any better than most dim sum places I’ve ever been), and I looked forward to a pretty light bill, as we didn’t order many dishes. Much to our dismay, the bill ended up at $97 before tip for four people. $97 for dim sum?? The pot of tea was over $7! Before we left, we made sure to drink as much tea as possible to get our money’s worth. It was packed in there, and there are a number of 5-star reviews on Yelp, so maybe I’m missing something, but there had better be Xiao Long Bao stuffed with gold dust in a wrapper of $20 bills to make it worth the money.

This afternoon, Amanda and I decided to check out the Power to the Peaceful concert in the park. Holy Hippies, Batman! We lasted about 15 minutes. Never before have I seen such a high concentration of B.O. and pot smoke. At least the walk there was nice.

Happy 4th!

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

How was your long weekend? I spent July 4th at Skywalker Ranch this year courtesy of Erik. Like I’ve been telling other people, it was the July 4th-iest July 4th I’ve ever had, complete with egg toss (I got egg on Erik’s pants :( ), tug of war, and horse carriage rides. Unfortunately, no free lightsabers and stormtroopers, but I had fun.

Saturday morning we went to the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market for the first time, and it was cool, but ungodly expensive. I’m not sure I’ve ever spent so much and walked out with so little. Afterwards it was lunch at Taylor’s Refresher, then back home to meet up with a friend from high school and his fiance. I’ll be heading down to L.A. in a couple weeks for their wedding, which I’m super excited about.

Sunday morning Buddy came up to the city to do an 8-mile run in Golden Gate Park. It went pretty well, and it certainly reminded me how nice it is to be able to run through the park. I think we kept just over a 10 minute/mile pace, which I was pretty proud of, especially considering most of the latter half of the run I mapped out was uphill. Afterwards, we headed to a friend’s barbecue, where we participated in the only appropriate activity after a long run: gorging ourselves on various meats. Yum.

I also beat Professor Layton last week. I ended up finding 109/120 puzzles, which I thought was pretty good. I may go back sometime and try to find the remaining 11, just to see what happens, but more likely I’ll just look them up on the intertubes. I highly recommend the game to anyone who’s a puzzle fan; besides being a nice collection of puzzles, it has a cute story and art style.

Finally, crazy robot dancing:

150px-Rat.svg.pngHappy year of the rat, everyone! I was a good Chinese kid and had fish last night for dinner (after being reminded by both my mom and my brother.) A special thanks to Yar and Jan for picking up my dinner for me from Pacific Catch. I was coming back to the city from climbing and wasn’t going to make it back to the city before closing, so I called in the order had JanYar pick it up for me. I ordered grilled escolar which was actually really good, but if you check out the wikipedia article I linked to, you’ll find some interesting information under the section titled “Effects of consumption”. I did have some mild “issues” today, but I’m not sure if it was the escolar, coincidence, or psychological. In any case, I may be avoiding this particular fish in the future.

In climbing news, I had a pretty good night last night and did a 10a, a 10d, and two 11as. I’m a little sore today, but I’m glad that I’m getting into better climbing shape. I’m also going to run at the gym today, so this is shaping up to be a pretty healthy start to the (Chinese) new year.

Back in the 505

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Sorry for the lack of update-itude, friends. I’m currently back in good ol’ Albuquerque, but I’m leaving tomorrow for NYC to visit the rest of the family there. The past couple of weeks have been busy with work, but I did manage to squeeze in the EA holiday party, picking up a cute 4 1/2-foot Christmas tree for the apartment, a visit from Enzo’s old dog walker (where he was so excited he peed, and by “he” I mean Enzo, not the dog walker), a Christmas cookie-making party, dinner at Chez Panisse, a hair cut, and finally ending up here, roughly in that order. While in Albuquerque, I somehow achieved my goal of seeing everyone I’d promised to see, so I’m proud of that.

I’d like to make a New Year’s resolution to update my site more frequently, but since I have a work deadline in a month or so, I’m not hopeful. But until I disappear into the abyss that is work, Happy Holidays to everyone! I hope everyone’s break has been full of fun, food, family, and all other manner of awesomeness.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Happy Thanksgiving, cyberland! Amanda and I hosted a really nice Thanksgiving at her Dad’s place in Oakland (sans her Dad…it’s a long story). We had a bunch of friends over, and way too much food: three kinds of stuffing, two huge bowls of mashed potatoes, gravy, two kinds of cranberry sauce (including the log kind), spinach casserole, green bean casserole, three pies, and salad. I was in charge of the turkey, which turned out great, if I do say so myself. But just a little FYI for myself and anyone else thinking of roasting a turkey: there are giblet bags in both ends of the turkey. Also, the little bags they come in don’t melt despite being in the oven for 3 hours.

…Or so I’ve heard.

Shake it like a Poloroid picture

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Last night Amanda was listening to some music on the stereo, and asked if I could turn the bass down. I was heading to the living room, and I thought, “Wow…the bass really is high!” but then I realized that the rumbling wasn’t from the stereo, but from an earthquake. It wasn’t super strong, but it was a lot longer than other earthquakes I’ve felt. Nothing broke or fell over, and Enzo didn’t seem to notice at all. The epicenter was down in the South Bay, so I’m curious to hear from my friends down there. Friends, are you okay??

In other news, Happy Halloween! I went to Camila’s house for a pumpkin carving party on Sunday, and carved a spider (from a pattern) on the other side of Ryan’s pumpkin, where he had carved a skull. I brought the pumpkin home, and put it on a ledge near my apartment building, spider-side out. However, someone keeps turning it around so that it’s skull-side out, and I don’t know who. So for the past few days, we’ve been having a silent spider vs. skull pumpkin battle, which has been interesting. I’m just glad that nobody’s smashed it yet.

Finally, I’m sleepy today. I’m going to blame it on the fact that I donated blood yesterday, but it’s more likely that I’m just lazy.

July 5 update

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Too tired/busy for full sentences. So here is my past week in review:

  • Stopped by the Poo Party at The Boys’ place. No, that’s not a typo.
  • Saw Alison Krauss at the Berkeley Greek Theater. She has the purest, most amazing voice I’ve ever heard.
  • Hung out with Domi and took some pictures of her.
  • Stayed at the new apartment, and slept on the floor on a mattress, crack-house style.
  • Been better about running consistently, but still no long-distance runs. Getting nervous about the half marathon.
  • Worked many many hours.
  • Still managed to get July 4 off, and went to a BBQ. Made delicious veggie skewers, and watched the fireworks at Shoreline.

The End.
