Everything or Nothing

Tuesday, February 17th, 2004

It's me!Today is a big day for me: my very first shipped game! James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing is in stores today. Woo! We haven’t gotten our copies yet, but I am very anxious to get one, because I have a secret fear that they somehow left my name out of the credits. I’ll believe it once I see “Sha Sha Chu” in there.

Edit [2/18/04]: We got our copies today and I just checked — I’m in there! Woohoo! Maybe I can get a screenshot… But I have a feeling I’m the only one excited about this.

Edit [2/19/04]: Added a “screenshot”!

As planned, this Saturday I went with Mariel, Domi, and Babs to San Francisco to go Christmas shopping. “Christmas browsing” is probably a more accurate term, as we hardly bought anything. But it was fun, and we were fortunate to have good timing, since it starting pouring just as we were leaving. It made for some nerve-wracking driving, but at least we didn’t get soaked.

I also wanted to wish Peter a belated happy birthday! Hope you enjoy the “d-pod”. Dork.

Finally, in more exciting news, we had our company annual awards meeting last Friday. No, I didn’t win any awards, but Mya showed up to sing the song she co-wrote for our game. She sounded really good, and apparently afterwards she went up to the 2nd floor to talk to some of the people who make the game. Not engineers, of course, because that would just scare her away. And rightly so.

TGIF

Friday, August 1st, 2003

The last few days of work have been annoying. The tool I work on has reached a point where we’re going to release it and then not touch it, for fear of breaking the game right before it ships. So Paul, another engineer on my team, and I branched off the code onto another server so we can work on future versions of the tool. Along with this branch came a whole lot of changes in the underlying code of the tool, so as a result, everything broke in a big way. I only got it running again this afternoon, and even though it runs, the functionality is pretty much completely broken. I get very anxious when I feel like I’m not moving forward, so I’ve been getting frustrated a lot while working. Hopefully we’ll get everything working again so I can actually start making progress again.

In other news, in my last entry, I included a link to Albert Kuo‘s website, as an experiment with Google. As of last Friday, when searching for “Albert Kuo” on Google, the page albertkuo.com was nowhere to be found in the search results. However, as of this morning, the very first search result is, lo and behold, albertkuo.com. Wacky.

I also have a sad story to tell. Last week, as I was walking out to my car in the morning, I noticed a little baby bird sitting in the middle of the sidewalk. Not wanting it to be squashed by bikers or big feet, I shooed it off the sidewalk to the relative safety of some nearby bushes. Feeling satisfied with myself and my good deed, I headed off to work. However, yesterday in the parking lot I noticed a little brown stain on the asphalt. Upon closer examination, what should I find but a very flat, very dead baby bird. I was sad.

Finally, I had a dream last night that Satan was coming out of my toilet.

I’m Back

Monday, July 14th, 2003

Well, it certainly has been some time since I’ve posted here. My real cue to get back into it is the fact that Peter has posted more often than I have, a sure sign of the coming apocalypse.

So probably the biggest thing that has happened is that I started at EA. As it turns out, I am not going to be working on the super sekret project I thought I was going to be working on, and have instead been consumed by the studio ameoba that is the Bond team. Of course, I didn’t know this until the day I started, so I was quite literally left behind after new-hire orientation with nowhere to go. Eventually I found my home in my second floor cubicle, complete with a swanky new Dell machine and dual LCD monitors. I am technically still in the Central Technologies group, but at the moment I am doing tools work for Bond. Things have been going well, and I’ve been doing some actual work, which is always satisfying.

Over the weekend, Mariel and I also signed the lease for an apartment. More on this later. Besides that, I went to Buddy and Ashley’s housewarming party, where I got to see a bunch of the other interns from last summer. Anita was also there, and I was suprised to find out that she has been working on campus for the past three weeks, unbeknownst to me. Of course, seeing as she works “normal” 9-5 hours, and I don’t get home until later than that, we might have a hard time running into each other. She did let me know that there is “at least one other” woman engineer at EA. I’m going to start a club. I can be president and vice president.

Other than that, the week has been pretty routine: get up, go to work, come home from work, eat dinner, be amazed at how tired I am, go to sleep. Rinse and repeat.

Finally, I’d like to congratulate Eric for being the 300th comment to this site. You get nothing but the satisfaction that you are in some very, very bad company.
