With the economy in disarray, here's something else to ponder. Casey and I were talking about this yesterday, and couldn't really come up with a satisfactory answer, so I thought I'd ask you all.

If you were falling out of a plane, would it be better (in terms of survival) to fall into a huge vat of cooked oatmeal, or a huge vat of water?

I said oatmeal because I thought it might have more give, and you'd be less likely to break your back or something.

What do you think? What other substances would be better to fall into? No cheap answers like "feathers".

This weekend, I was at REI, browsing through the books section. I picked up Ultramarathon Man, and considered buying it, but decided to save money instead and put it back. As I put it back, I thought, "You know, they should have something like Netflix, but for books." Then I realized they do have that. It's called a library. Go me.

Honorable mention:
This one will only apply to the CS nerds out there. A while ago, I was driving in my car, and saw a UPS truck. I thought to myself, "Someone should write a computer program to calculate the most efficient route for the delivery trucks." And then I remembered that, oh yeah, that's the Traveling Salesman problem.

Even if you are not from California, please take a moment to read this message from my friend Cliff, who is volunteering for the No on 8 campaign. Send a message to California and to the country that we won't stand for writing discrimination into our state constitution.

Contrary to the poll results that have received media attention (that show us with a lead of 51-40-9), our private polling shows a different picture. Some such polls show us barely winning, others show us barely losing. The key is the approximate 20 percent of voters who are undecided about marriage equality. It is this undecided block that makes the advertisements – and the money to purchase them – so crucial. The campaign is purchasing another block of advertisements on September 18, so the need for funds is urgent.

I hate doing this sort of thing, but I am asking you to send this message on to anyone who might be willing to give money to fight Proposition 8. People who want to give may do so by going to www.noonprop8.com and donating. Because that organization likes to track how much their volunteers raise, please enter "521" (without the quotation marks) in the referral code space.

This campaign is about more than marriage (though that would be enough). It is about equal treatment under law; it is about defeating the politics of bigotry; it is about disarming a Right Wing that uses civil liberties as a wedge issue; and it is about lgbt rights in the entire country. Never before have voters considered whether to strip marriage rights away from same-sex couples. A victory for the Right in California would greatly embolden them in every state. We have to succeed and defeat Prop 8, and we have to be sure we wake up on November 5 knowing that we did everything we could to win.

Amanda and I went on an awesome 10 mile run this morning. Since running through the park isn't quite enough distance, we started off running the Panhandle before entering the park and doing basically our normal park run. We kept an average pace of 9:54 min/mile, and we were at 9:45 until the last couple miles (the combination of hills + fatigue slowed down our pace significantly.)

According to my Garmin watch, we burned 1,060 calories, which I promptly made up at Darla's by eating a bacon, swiss, and mushroom burger and onion rings. Yum.

I'm actually quite excited, because I think this is probably the best running shape I've ever been in, including my marathon training time. Hopefully I'll be able to keep this up.

I had an eye appointment on Tuesday, and apparently due to the difference in eyeglasses prescription between my left and right eyes, my contact lenses are now deemed "medically necessary", and my contacts are free! Hooray!

I also talked to my doctor about getting LASIK, and he gave me a "cautious yes", which I'll take. He recommended a doctor to do the surgery, so I may set up a consultation appointment and see what's what. Bionic eyes, here I come!

My mom told me last night that she and my dad are volunteering for the Obama campaign. They are starting with voter registration drives, and later will be moving onto canvasing the neighborhood, encouraging registered Democrats to turn out to the polls on November 4th.

I'm feeling lazy about titles at the moment.

How was your Labor Day? Mine was blissfully free of labor. Had a couple dinners with friends, and not one, but two barbecues. Basically the best weekend ever. Also went on a 6 mile run, which went all right. I'm trying to do a long run (6 or more miles) every weekend from now on. So far, I'm 1/1. Go me.

I've been working more on my photo website (no, it's not up yet, so don't go a-lookin' for it), which has been fun but also obsession-inducing. I stayed up until 1:30 am the other day making sure my blog validated on w3.org. Yes, I'm a nerd. I also installed photo cart software so people can buy prints, which is pretty cool.

Today I met up with Cliff and Andy for lunch, and we ended up going to Yank Sing for dim sum. The food was good, (though not any better than most dim sum places I've ever been), and I looked forward to a pretty light bill, as we didn't order many dishes. Much to our dismay, the bill ended up at $97 before tip for four people. $97 for dim sum?? The pot of tea was over $7! Before we left, we made sure to drink as much tea as possible to get our money's worth. It was packed in there, and there are a number of 5-star reviews on Yelp, so maybe I'm missing something, but there had better be Xiao Long Bao stuffed with gold dust in a wrapper of $20 bills to make it worth the money.

This afternoon, Amanda and I decided to check out the Power to the Peaceful concert in the park. Holy Hippies, Batman! We lasted about 15 minutes. Never before have I seen such a high concentration of B.O. and pot smoke. At least the walk there was nice.
