I've been having a really good climbing week. On Monday I did a 9, 10a, two 10cs, a 10d, and an 11a, all without falling once! And yesterday, I did two V3s, only the second and third V3s I've ever done. Woo! The weird thing is, on both days I was feeling pretty tired, and yesterday I was even feeling dizzy while I was bouldering. Go figure.
Yesterday on the way to lunch, Buddy and I were talking about how in movies and television shows, people are always calling that number that says "At the tone, the time will be [blah]. *beep*" but that we'd never heard of a number that actually does that. However, Erik told us that if you call "POPCORN", i.e. 767-2676, you'll hear that message. Incredulous, Buddy pulled out his phone and tried it. To our surprise, it worked! Try it out!
Edit: It turns out that POP-XXXX (where XXXX is any four numbers) works! Try it out! Thanks to Buddy for the updated info.
Also, Matt sent me this link about a high school grad who was posing as a Stanford student for an entire year. After you get past the hilarity of the whole situation, it's actually kind of sad that this girl (who obviously has some serious mental problems), apparently felt the need to tell her friend and family that she had been accepted into Stanford, when she hadn't. Goooo Asian parents! Seriousness aside, I think her "roommate" is gonna get a-whippin' when she goes home for Christmas:
"Still, Kim had neither a Stanford ID nor a key, forcing her to sneak into meals and enter her room through its window, which overlooked the Munger construction pit, the Wilbur parking lot and a dumpster, three feet off the ground. Zhou never noticed, as she spent nearly all her nights in her boyfriend’s room."
Here's something I've wondered about sweepstakes that require you to scratch something off of a card. There are the kind that have only one square to scratch off (this post does not concern those), and there are the kind that require you to scratch off a subset of the squares, say 1 out of 2 boxes, as the current Spiderman 3 sweepstakes does.
My question is: when you have a winning card for the grand prize, do they rig the card such that no matter which square(s) you scratch off, you win? Or do you not only have to have a winning card, but also choose the correct boxes?
I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to scratch off a few squares, not win anything, scratch off the rest of them (as I usually do), and discover that you could have won a car.
Any of you who have tried to make plans with me on Wednesday evenings knows that my Wednesdays are devoted to heading over to Peter and Justin's to watch TV. Sounds exciting, I know. It started out by us watching episodes of Lost, but between seasons, we have also watched Firefly and Battlestar Galactica. Now that Lost is wrapping up its current season and Battlestar is not returning until 2008, we're fast approaching a TV-less Wednesday. I'd really like to see Heroes, but most of the people we watch with have seen it already. I thought Entourage would be a good choice; the couple of episodes I've seen were good. Maybe Sopranos? Weeds?
Do any of you have any recommendations for TV shows we could get on DVD? Recommendations for old shows are fine, too.
Last year for Mother's Day, as is tradition, we kids had flowers delivered to our mom. My parents were out when the deliveryman came, so in a fit of inspiration (or stupidity), the deliveryman hid the flowers in the corner of our porch, and covered them with the doormat. As a result, my mom didn't find them until several days later, at which point they were less than fresh. Fortunately, this year my dad happened to be outside just as the deliveryman pulled up, so my mom was able to enjoy fresh flowers this year. Happy Mother's Day, Mom!
[Edit: OMGI'm a bad frend. Can't believe I forgot to add this.]
Friday night we went to Cafe Mums in Japantown for Yar's birthday. It's all-you-can-eat Shabu-shabu, which is always awesome. I ate a lot of beef, and a lot of Napa cabbage. Yum. For $12 more, it's also all-you-can-drink! Let's just say that everyone had a good time. Happy Birthday, Yar!
Yesterday I went to KFOG Kaboom!, an annual concert and fireworks show put on by a local radio station. It is held at Piers 30/32 in SF, so we first met some friends at the Ferry Building down the street. As we walked down Embarcadero, we were met by a HUGE line of people. At first we thought it was for people who were in line to buy tickets, but it was in fact the line for people who had purchased tickets ahead of time. We got in the line just after 4:00 (gates opened at 4:00), and didn't get in until 5:25, just as Ozomatli was finishing their set. This caused many sadnesses for all of us, because we were mostly there to see Ozo. The other acts were Guster, who I honestly thought had faded into obscurity in 1998, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who I had never heard of. The night would have a total bust had it not been capped off with the most amazing fireworks display I have ever seen. Lots of kinds of fireworks I had never seen before.
Today I am at work (boo!), finishing off a last few bugs from our milestone last Friday. I think Brian and I fixed them, though, so I'll probably just stick around for a little longer to make sure no new issues crop up.
Hi, friends. Apologies for the fact that my site has been so photo-heavy recently. I thought I'd take this opportunity to get back into the groove of occasionally crapping words onto it, too.
Things have been pretty routine lately. The climbing has been only so-so, which is disappointing. I feel like my endurance has been really poor lately, so I may try doing a bunch of easier long climbs when I go again on Monday.
Work has been steady, but not crazy, which is a little surprising considering we have a major deadline next Friday. In fact, I was able to take this past Friday off, which was excellent. Friday night I went to an amazing Ethiopian restaurant in San Jose, Mudai. The food was incredible and the prices very reasonable. Ethiopian food has recently surpassed Indian food as my current food obsession, so I'm just waiting to see how long it will be until I burn myself out on it. Yum.
Yesterday I went on a hike at Portola Redwoods State Park, which was really nice, but waaaay farther than I thought it was. Not really by distance, but it's miles of windy mountain roads, so it was about an hour and a half drive from Mountain View. I was even somehow able to make myself carsick even though I was driving, something that until then I always thought was impossible. I guess I'm just awesome like that. The park is really nice, and not at all crowded (probably due to the afore-mentioned reallly long drive), but filled with banana slugs, which was not awesome. We even saw banana slugs dining on piles of horse poo, which you all should be glad I had the sense not to photograph. But you're welcome for the mental image.
Ceremony and Reception (which doesn't include many reception shots because I was getting tired at that point)
I'm pretty pleased with how the shots turned out. I had some trouble with the skin tones in the color shots (it was a cloudy day), but overall I'm pretty happy. When I was stealing shots from the hired photographers, I totally rediscovered my love for the long end of the 28-135 lens, especially since I've been only using the 35mm prime for the past month or so.
Our 5th reunion is this October, and they wanted everyone to submit a page for a Class Book that everyone's going to get. I'm not sure this is what they had in mind... I was especially proud when I thought of my "Current Life Motto." If you know me, I hope you'll agree that I try to live by that rule.
