SPEED TEAM

For those of you local folks, watch your speedometer on 280 today. According to this article:

The California Highway Patrol has dispatched a "speed team'' to a stretch of 280 between Mountain View and San Bruno with instructions to pull over and ticket vehicles going even 5 mph over the posted speed limit this afternoon.

Good thing the local police is spending their resources pulling over people going 5 miles over the speed limit and not, you know, catching murderers and stuff.

I don't know. I think the police should enforce the speed limits. I mean, it's the law. And it's easier to catch speeders than murderers and they're less of a burden on the courts too. Think it's a waste of time and resources? How about getting the government to stop posting ridiculously low 1970s OPEC-oil-crisis speeds. Our cars nowadays are faster, safer, more efficient, yet we're still stuck with cold-war era limits.

Why do we have laws that make almost everybody a criminal and then selectively apply them to purposefully discourage non-illegal behaviour?

Just my 2c.

Bottom line: catching murderers doesn't make money.

I don't understand. How can you possibly ticket everyone going 5 mph over the speed limit on 280? There isn't anyone who *doesn't* go 5 mph over the speed limit. For a fair amount of 280 north of Stanford, driving at the speed limit is dangerous because everyone's going faster than that.

I drive with traffic. If the CHP wants to give me a ticket for driving with traffic, I'll be ticked off, but I doubt I'll feel that I've done anything wrong....

Oh no! I guess my days of pretending I'm in a spaceship are over :( But at least now I can proceed to weave erratically from lane to lane while putting on makeup and talking on my cell phone, like anyone on 280 who's doing less than 80...
