REGRET

Like many other kids of the 80s, my sister and I were big fans of The Transformers cartoon, and all the associated toys. We had many classic ones like Thundercracker, Skywarp, Optimus Prime, and Prowl. One night, when I was but a young child, my dad took me to KB Toys to pick out a new Transformer. And there it was on the shelf, calling to me; the Holy Grail of Transformers: Megatron. He was a Walther P-38 (James Bond's gun), complete with a scope, 3-piece silencer, and 3-piece stock. All this was housed in ultra-cool chrome-plated plastic. My Dad bought him for me, and when I got home, I was trembling with excitement as I opened up the box, took out the instructions, and tried to transform him from his gun form to his robot form. "Tried" being the important word. No matter what, I could not figure out how to change this Walter P-38 into the leader of the Decepticons. So I passed him on to my Dad, who surely would be able to transform him. But no such luck. Even my Dad, with his Engineering PhD, was unable to decipher the instructions. So what did we do? Did we put it off until the next day and try again later? No. We returned him. And now, checking on ebay, that very same toy which probably originally cost about $10 is selling for $150. But beyond the value of the toy skyrocketing, it was Megatron.

Megatron...
