If you are, and you are asked to donate, don’t be a douche-bag and pull out at the last minute.
Part of the fault, I’m sure, lies with the recruiting strategies of the donation banks, as I know from experience that when it comes to recruiting donors of color, they tend to try to get everyone they see to sign up, without giving you much information on what bone marrow donation really entails. Whether it’s peer pressure or poor information dissemination, we now know that there are at least three people who are signed up to donate who had no idea what they were actually being asked to do.
Someone close to me has been waiting for a bone marrow donation for over a year. Three, count them three times, a donor has been contacted, has agreed to donate, and then pulled out. While I understand that it is within your rights as a donor to refuse to donate, goddammit, please don’t sign up to donate if you have no intention of going through with it. You’re not only wasting time and money, you are literally wasting someone’s life away.
People suck.
