BANG!

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Another weekend where I’m just on-call for work instead of having to go in. Two in a row omg! I filled in last minute yesterday on Yar’s team for BANG (a puzzle hunt, for those of you not in the know) which took place in San Rafael. This was only 8 hours long and was all in a few block radius down town, so we got to enjoy the beautiful weather. I was basically useless for the puzzles, but I did have a ton of fun, and our team ended up coming in third!

Afterwards we had yummy (and cheap!) Chinese food in SF before heading down to Mountain View for Matt’s Hootenanny fundraiser. That was also really fun; a little Rock Band-ing, and some guitar playing and singing along. I got to play the couple songs in my repertoire, which are More Than Words, and Tears in Heaven, though I have forgotten most of the latter one. Justin also taught me To Be With You. Hootenanny!

Are you a bone marrow donor?

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

If you are, and you are asked to donate, don’t be a douche-bag and pull out at the last minute.

Part of the fault, I’m sure, lies with the recruiting strategies of the donation banks, as I know from experience that when it comes to recruiting donors of color, they tend to try to get everyone they see to sign up, without giving you much information on what bone marrow donation really entails. Whether it’s peer pressure or poor information dissemination, we now know that there are at least three people who are signed up to donate who had no idea what they were actually being asked to do.

Someone close to me has been waiting for a bone marrow donation for over a year. Three, count them three times, a donor has been contacted, has agreed to donate, and then pulled out. While I understand that it is within your rights as a donor to refuse to donate, goddammit, please don’t sign up to donate if you have no intention of going through with it. You’re not only wasting time and money, you are literally wasting someone’s life away.

People suck.

It’s alive!

And by ‘it’ I mean ‘me’. Or to be more grammatically correct, ‘I’. Anyway…

Apologies to all my readers who have surely abandoned me by now. I have been in the middle of the most prolonged and intense crunch period I’ve ever experienced at work, but it’s winding down now, and I have emerged relatively unscathed, if not a little fatter and with a more confused sleep schedule.

The one positive about my 1pm-midnight work schedule is that I’ve gotten to visit Buddy, i.e. Casty McBrokenAnkle almost every morning on my way to work. (I am presuming, perhaps wrongly, that this is a positive for him as well…)

Last weekend I had my first weekend off in a while, and made good use of the San Francisco sunshine. We hosted a baby shower on Saturday which was actually not crappy, and on Sunday the mom-to-be’s mother treated us to Easter Brunch at the Marriott downtown, which was delicious. Afterwards, a group of us went to Dolores Park to check out the “Hunky Jesus” competition which was one of those only-in-San-Francisco things. But it was good to hang out in the sun and eat snacks.

Hopefully I’ll be back on a normal work schedule within a week or so and get back to my very important life, i.e. running, climbing, playing games, and catching up on TV. Woo!
