Birthday Funtimes

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

For my birthday party last Saturday, my friends treated me to dinner at Cafe Mums in Japantown. They have all-you-can-eat Shabu Shabu, as well as all-you-can-drink beer and sake, for about $20 more. So basically, best ever. The one thing that wasn’t as fun about dinner was that it had a very frat party-like clientele, something that was new for this visit. There were a couple other big parties who were loud and obnoxious, and one of them even told he waitress that they didn’t care we were waiting for their table, even though they’d been there for 3 hours. I blame Yelp for spreading the word to the Marina crowd. Despite that, it was a lot of fun, and certain members of our party had *extra* fun with the all-you-can-drink. So much extra fun, in fact, that some of the fun *spilled out* onto the sidewalk outside our apartment later that night.

After dinner we headed back to our new place which actually fit a good number of people without feeling crazy crowded, so that was pleasing. Amanda got me a train-shaped cake from Citizen Cake which was awesome and delicious. Awesomelicious.

My friends (who are awesome, by the way,) also got together and bought me an iPhone and some DS games! I picked up the iPhone on Sunday and I’m still trying to figure it out, but it sure is pretty.

Finally, congrats to Jan and Peter for being the future of videogames! I am apparently stuck in its past…

The happiest day of my life

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Yesterday was the happiest day of my life. Why? Well, let me tell you a story, friends. For the past couple of years, I would occasionally hear a buzzing noise in my car when I drove. I thought it was coming from the steering column, but sometimes it would also sound like it was coming from the center console. Strangely enough, it also only seemed to happen when the weather was warm. It was just infrequent enough to be completely annoying, and it basically drove me crazy. But despite all of my efforts, I couldn’t locate the source of the noise. Well, yesterday as I was driving back to work after getting a headlight replaced, the noise started buzzing again, and I suddenly realized it was coming from my cruise control lever. I touched it, and the buzzing stopped. If I wasn’t driving, I would have done the dance of joy. This gives me a disproportionate amount of happiness.

Busted

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

This morning when I turned to get on 280S at the on-ramp near Glen Park Bart, the traffic was a bit backed up because there was a police car that had pulled someone over on the on-ramp. I started to go around when the policeman waved me over to pull over. So I did, a little but confused about what I had done. He was talking to the other driver, then he came over and told me that he stopped me for “failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.” I said “Okay,” which is pretty much my standard response when I get pulled over, but that seemed to confuse him, so he repeated himself, and I said “Okay” again. He asked me if I had seen the pedestrian and I said “as I was turning,” which was true. I saw that he was about 20 feet away at the start of the crosswalk when I turned. The officer said, “So you don’t look in front of you when you drive?” and I didn’t respond, because really, what would the right response be? I gave him my license and registration and he went back to the other car to talk to her for a few minutes. When he came back, the other car started pulling away, and he said “I’m in a bit of a predicament. I have two of you pulled over, and only one ticket, so I asked her who I should give the ticket to, and she said you, so I’m letting her go. What do you think about that?” I said “Okay” again. He handed back my license and registration and said, “No, I wouldn’t do that. I’m letting you both go.” I said “Thank you” but in my head I was saying “WTF????”. He continued, “The next time, you’ll kill someone, and I don’t know if you’ve killed someone before, but it’s not a good feeling.” More mental “WTF”-ing. Then he told me “Drive off”, so I did.

It was a little annoying to be pulled over for failure to stop for someone who was 20 feet away, when I’ve been very nearly run over or honked at several times crossing other streets in SF. And if this really is a big problem at this particular crosswalk, maybe they should rethink the whole crosswalk-across-freeway-on-ramp thing and build a pedestrian walkway.

Now, as far as interactions with policemen go, that one was fairly painless, but it never ceases to amaze me how every policeman seems to have that same jerky way of talking down to you. It must be something they teach at the Academy.

Moved!

Monday, March 9th, 2009

The move this weekend went surprisingly well. Delancey Street Movers as usual were super nice and fast, and everything was in the new place after about 3 1/2 hours. I also had the most painless Comcast installation I’ve ever had: the guy was on time, he was nice, and he got the cable working in just a few minutes! Amazing.

The new place is awesome, and much nicer than the old one. The only minus is that I get no cell service inside. :( Also, our land line was supposed to be turned on this weekend, but it doesn’t appear to work yet. So…basically I’m not particularly contactable when I’m at home. Hopefully one or more of these situations will be resolved soon.

Prop 8

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

As I type, the California State Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments for the lawsuits attempting to overturn Proposition 8. The main argument for overturning the proposition is that it constitutes a revision of the state constitution, rather than an amendment. If this were true, it would require a 2/3 vote of the legislature, which essentially means it wouldn’t pass. The main argument against overturning the proposition is that it violates the will of the people. Well, sometimes the people are wrong. Sometimes they are driven by hate, fear, and misinformation, and it takes a small group of people in power to stand up and set things right. I’m not holding my breath since I’m listening right now and it’s really not going well, but here’s to hoping that if things don’t go our way this time, it will someday soon.

Crazy BSG Spoilers

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Don’t watch this if you haven’t watched last Friday’s (2/27) episode. You have been warned.

1:03-1:40 may be the most exciting 37 seconds of television I’ve ever experienced. Brilliant.

Hello, World!

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

First things first:

Happy Birthday, Amanda and Joe!

Here are your bunnies:

Sandwiched between a 16-hour and a 14-hour work day, I was able to attend their joint 30th/60th birthday party last Saturday, which was a lot of fun. Plus, leftover cake! Mmm…cake for breakfast.

As for work, I have emerged victorious after an absolutely brutal weekend. As bad as it was, part of me actually thought the experience was kind of…fun. I’m not sure how many of you have done this kind of crunch, but there’s something about all of you getting together to squash the last few problems as a team that’s pretty exciting. On Friday, I left at 2am, and about half of my group stayed behind to play a board game together. I guess there really is something to doing a job you like with people whose company you enjoy. It certainly could be a lot worse, that’s for sure. Hopefully things will slow down going forward, but it’s more likely it will be stretches of boredom punctuated by spikes of extreme panic. Good times!
