Hamptonia

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Got back last night from a nice family vacation in East Hampton. I took a redeye to New York Wednesday night and arrived (with eyes appropriately red) at around 6 am Thursday morning. I took a quick nap at my brother’s place (where my parents had arrived the previous day) before heading to Long Island with the dog in tow. My sister in law, her mother, and my niece had arrived the day before, so they were waiting for us when we arrived. And maybe I’m biased, but I have to declare here that my niece is officially the Cutest Baby of All Time. She walks like a pro now, and has a wide vocabulary consisting of words like “Mommy”, “apple”, “dog”, “shoes”, and “goggles” (which she learned while I was there, thank you very much.)

The rest of the time was spent doing some combination of the following: reading (finished the new Harry Potter book), swimming, hanging out with the fam, going to the beach, eating waaaayyyy too much, watching a few movies, and playing with my niece. You’ll notice that “sleeping” was not in that list. This is because my family has a strange aversion to allowing my sister and I to sleep in on vacations. This has been the case for as long as I can remember. Usually this involves my family walking into the room, not explicitly trying to wake us up, but talking at a normal volume, using the computer, etc. Eventually, we either break down and get up, or my Mom directly tells us to get up. Sunday morning, my brother first woke us up at 7:57am to give us donuts (which was, admittedly, very nice) and then the circus began. I eventually caved in and got up around 9 or so, but my sister kept sleeping. At 10, my Mom told my sister to get up.

Mom: Get up!
Sister: Ugh.
Mom: Get up! It’s late!
Sister: Why? Don’t we only have [quick_family_thing] to do?
Mom: If you don’t get up, people will be waiting for you!
Sister: Why?? What are we doing??
Mom (with great urgency): I don’t know!

Really, how can you argue with that?

My sister and I took the bus back to Manhattan Sunday afternoon where I got to see her swank new apartment. We watched a bit of TV, had dinner, and in the evening I met up with my high school friend Eli. I hadn’t seen her since high school, so it was nice to catch up. We met at Union Square, and I had a brief flash of panic when I thought I might not recognize her if I saw her, but we managed to find each other with no problem. We went to a tea house, then met up with a friend of hers and sat up on the roof deck of the apartment he was watching. In high school Eli and I would always have New York City vs. San Francisco debates (I being on the New York side, and she being on the San Francisco side) so we decided it was some sort of karmic retribution that she should end up in New York, and I in the Bay Area.

Monday morning I got up early to meet my other high-school bud Lisa before she had to go to work. We sat in Au Bon Pain and had expensive orange juice and had a nice lil’ chat. She filled me in on her exciting adventures, and I filled her in on my boring non-adventures. Good times.

Afterwards I picked up my stuff at my sister’s apartment before meeting my sister-in-law for lunch at the newly-redone MoMA. It’s very nice; nicer than the SF MoMA, I’m inclined to say. After lunch it was off to the airport via subway, then back to the good ol’ Bay Area.

It was a really nice, relaxing trip, despite getting less sleep than I get here. I also gotta give huge proppy shout-out thanks to Buddy for taking care of Enzo while I was gone.

In some sadder news, my dog Wendy was put to sleep early Monday morning. My parents put her in a kennel, and while she was at the kennel, her hind legs collapsed (she had pretty severe arthritis.) The kennel people took her to the vet, where they gave her injections of arthritis medication to try to get her back on her feet. Unfortunately, the medication is bad for your kidneys (hers were likely not doing to well to begin with) so her kidneys began to fail. Since her kidneys were failing, she started to have seizures. Fortunately, she held on long enough for my parents to return home, so they were there when the vet put her to sleep. (My other two dogs were put to sleep when no members of the family were present.) Wendy was 15 years old and had a very good life, but I was still really sad to see her go. She was the last of my childhood pets, so I think she was probably lonely after my other two dogs died. She’ll be cremated like my other dogs and sent back home.

If you need to reach me from tonight until Monday evening, I shall be summering in the Hamptons with the family. I’ll have my cell phone, but I don’t know if I’ll have e-mail access.

You Kahn Do It!

Friday, August 19th, 2005

This weekend my buddy Kahn visited me all the way from New York. I met Kahn several years ago through a friend when I visted her in college. He arrived Thursday evening so we had a quick dinner and just hung out. Friday I had to work (despite my delusional belief earlier in the week that I would be able to take the day off) so Kahn took my car and explored the area. Saturday morning we had a nice brunch with Domi and May Ling and Florence, complete with an impromptu yoga session (don’t ask.) In the afternoon Kahn and I went to the SF MoMA and saw a lot of very M MA, including a piece that consisted of a single pencil line on a paper, titled “Drawing with One Line.” Erm. Later we met Yar, Jan, and Yar’s friend Dana for dinner at the always-excellent Ti Couz (check out the Block-View pic of it). Sunday we met Cheryl for dim sum at the Great Mall (where I tried on some new shoes)and saw Hustle and Flow, which was pretty good. In the evening we joined Jess, Buddy, Marc, and Eugene for dinner and the jazz show at Yoshi’s. It was my first time there, and although the sushi was nothing to write home about, the jazz was excellent. And we even survived scary scary Oakland. :) The next day or so was filled with mostly work, hanging out with Kahn, and watching Ultimate Fighting and bodybuilding in HD. Ew. As a thank-you for letting him stay wtih me, he gave me Kung Fu Hustle, a bouquet of flowers, and even vacuumed my apartment! Future house guests take note. :D It was really nice having him here, and I think this may bring the number of our face-to-face meetings up to 5.

Tuesday night I went rock climbing for the second time. I did three 5.7s and two 5.8s! Woo! If I keep up this weekly climbing, I may opt for a monthly membership to save a lil’ bit of cash money.

Finally, in most exciting of news: check it out!

is Hard!

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

This is a snippet of an IM conversation with Yar, where I told him about how I found a nasty bug in my code at 10:00 p.m. Monday night:

[16:06] Sha Bond: yeah i was pretty pissed when i realized stuff was broken
[16:06] Sha Bond: i had a brief moment where i was really afraid i would start to cry
[16:06] Sha Bond: this is why they don’t let girls program
[16:06] Coltar: that, and you name all your variables “barbie” and “shopping”
[16:07] Coltar: void BuyAPony ( HORSEDATA* MyPony)
[16:07] Coltar: i hate when I see that.

And the response from Jenny:

[16:56] etherjag: yes
[16:56] etherjag: in fact i was just coding up some variables
[16:56] etherjag: int MarryARichMan;

Finally:

[17:27] Coltar: ooh
[17:27] Coltar: MarryARichMan = HOPEFULLY;

Pretty nerdy. I believe I promised Yar to “never speak of this again”, but this isn’t technically speaking, is it?

An Experiment, LOL

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

If you check this site with any regularity, you’ve probably noticed the flood of comments to this post relating to Blink-182, mostly. From what I can gather, people use the comments for that post as some sort of message board, and many of them think the page exists to talk about Blink-182; when someone brings up another band (usually Good Charlotte,) there’s usually a couple responses informing the person that the page is to talk about Blink-182 only. There’s a small, loosely-knit community of repeat visitors, so I’ve created a proper forum for them, and I will wait to see what happens. Maybe nothing, maybe something interesting. It’s like an online social experiment. With really really bad spelling.

Signs I Might Be Working Too Hard

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

This morning I discovered not one but two new grey hairs right smack on the top of my noggin. Bleh.

In related news, the daughters of one of our project managers put this up at work. Couldn’t have put it better myself.

I Hope You All Learned Something Today

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

What did I learn in my motorcycle safety class this past weekend? Ironically, that riding a motorcycle is damn dangerous. On somewhat of a whim, I signed up for a class with Northern California Motorcycle Training (which, as an aside, is impossible to find on Google) just to see what motorcycle riding is like. We had 4 hours of classroom time (picture the worst of driver’s ed — stupid videos, a dumb book, and a ridiculously easy test — compressed into 4 hours) and around 10 hours of riding time. I will admit that it was very fun, but I don’t think I’ll buy a bike. (At least not until I’m 50 and having a full-blown mid-life crisis.) I’ll probably get the license anyway just because I can, but as I’ve been telling people, the danger : fun ratio of riding a motorcycle is much too high for me. Add in the expense of buying a bike, safety equipment, and insurance, and you’ve got an equation for a pricey, purely recreational hobby that might kill you. Much like macramé.

Saturday night I went with Buddy and Jess to a celebration for Climbing For a Cure‘s recent Everest summit. Rob Chang (whom I finally got a meet in person) gave a great talk about this climb as well as other climbs he’s done in his career. I also got a chance to speak to his mother again (“Hi, do you remember me? We met in a dim sum restaurant…”) While I was there, I bid on (and won! Just got the e-mail) a really nice tanka that was done by a monk in a Nepalese refugee camp. I was also able to buy some tibetan prayer flags which I’m going to put up in my apartment.

Sunday evening Babs, Domi, and I took Florence to her first-ever concert! It was Hot Hot Heat at the legendary Fillmore. Opening for them were World Leader Pretend (who we unfortunately mostly missed due to my poor, poor sense of direction) and Eisley, a rocked-up girly(er) version of Hanson. Or something. After two whole hours (!), Hot Hot Heat finally took the stage and totally rocked the place. The floors were literally shaking from the crowd jumping around — it was awesome. Congrats to Florence on her initiation into the cult of pot-filled air, sweaty people, and ringing ears.
