Ice Cold

Monday, March 28th, 2005

Hung out with Domi & Da Boyz on Friday. While we waited for people to arrive, we watched a bit of Harold and Kumar, and greeted Walter with shouts of “BOOBIES WALTER COME QUICK BOOBIES!!!” (it was the part of the movie with Freakshow’s wife) when he got home from work. We had dinner at Shiva’s the new(ish) Indian place on Castro. The food was pretty good, but pricey for Indian. Afterwards we had gelato. So very, very cold.

On Saturday Buddy, Marc, and I took a day trip up to Tahoe. We met up with Beck and Adam, who were up there for the weekend. The weather was nice and warm, which made the snow a bit slushy. I ended up having a really good day of snowboarding, and feel like I’m actually improving! I still had my fair share of falls, but I was definitely turning more easily than I ever have before. I think part of this was the total lack of powder on the slopes, making it easier for me not to catch edges. Ridge Run at Heavenly rocks. And you get an awesome view going up the Sky Express lift. On the way back we had dinner at some creperie in or around Sacramento. Thanks to Buddy for driving on the way back, even though he made fun of my car‘s lack of acceleration from 0-20. :(

This morning I was all prepared to check a whole mess o’ things off my Palm’s To-Do list, but was utterly foiled by the fact that Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Fry’s and Office Depot were all closed for Easter. Booo. Instead I watched a few DVR-ed episodes of Scrubs.

OMG. John at work told me about the BESTEST website ever: Abandonia. Tonight I played Freddy Pharkas, Gold Rush, Willy Beamish, and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And thanks to DOSBox, I now know how to make all my old adventure games work on my computer. Sweeet!

In a tangentially-related note, I’ve started to say “OMG” out-loud in conversations. I’m not sure why, but I think I should stop. So very, very nerdy.

The Plan

Thursday, March 24th, 2005

So I have this very very ambitious workout plan I’ve made for myself which I’ve already failed at. However, writing it down makes it more real, so here’s the plan:

Monday: Lift weights
Tuesday: Short run on treadmill (~4 miles)
Wednesday: Day off
Thursday: Short run on treadmill
Friday: Lift weights
Saturday or Sunday: Longer run (> 7 miles), and one day off

Can I do it? Let’s hear a resounding, “Probably not!” Woo!

I have a feeling (i.e. a dull pain) telling me that my right IT-band pain is probably going to return on my next run. Tuesday I did a short run, but I did it faster than I usually do, which I may have not been ready for. I’ve been having a little bit of pain in my right knee, and the popping in my hip has returned a bit. I should probably see my chiropractor again…

I’ve also realized that this website is sort of misnamed, now that I’ve finished marathon training now. I’ll redo that sometime soon. I’m thinking http://run.shashachu.com/ would work. If only there were “.run” domains. :)

Fundraising grand total: $5418

This weekend my friend’s threw me a Super Sekret Surprise Birthday Bash. Saturday morning I was originally planning on going running with Babs, Buddy, and Kevin. Because of the rain, we cancelled the run and I went to Hobee’s with Babs and Buddy. Afterwards we made a quick pearl milk tea stop and headed back to Babs’ to watch The Incredibles. Earlier in the day, Buddy had told me that he was going to take me to dinner in the city. Babs heard about this and wanted to join. So around 3 he said it was time to go, but that we had to make a stop off in Palo Alto.

Using Buddy’s phat GPS system, we were headed to Palo Alto, when Babs made a quick turn into Palo Alto Bowl. Hmm… suspicious indeed. As we were pulling in, I saw a car that looked just like Rahul’s. Wait, no, it was Rahul’s. A little confused, I followed them into the bowling alley and lo and behold, all my friends were there. Yay! So we bowled a couple games (Camila totally kicked ass) and then headed to Peter’s for food ‘n’ cake.

I was surprised, but I did have inklings that something might be going on. Earlier in the week I had e-mail most of the people present asking if anyone wanted to go to Monterey on Saturday, and almost nobody responded. (Jan responded, but it was apparently in a panic.) So I figured that a) my friends hate me or b) they were planning something. I’m glad it turned out to be option b).

So thank you to everyone who attended, especially those of you sneaky kids who planned it out. I have the bestest friends ever.

The next day I did end up going to Monterey with Brendan, Diane, Jan, Yar, Kurtis, and Rahul, and saw the Great White Shark. She was smaller than I anticipated, but still very cool. I also accomplished my other two Monterey goals: eating clam chowder in a bread bowl and getting cotton candy. I like to set low expectations for myself.

Finally, in other exciting news, a woman at work gave me her Palm m130 for free! I recently have been forgetting a lot of things, so I asked around at work if anyone had an old Palm they wanted to get rid of for cheap. And nothing’s cheaper than free! Last night I stayed up late putting everyone’s phone numbers into it. Woo!

Edit: Also, do any of you have a PSP? If so, I wanna see it! My cube-neighbor bought one this morning but he’s not opening it because he’s thinking of selling it on ebay. :(

Edit 2: I saw Robots last night. It was okay, but forgettable. (As evidenced by the fact that I forgot to mention it here.)

Ken Jennings I Ain’t

Friday, March 18th, 2005

Last night I had a dream that involved some sort of puzzle/trivia type game. There were a couple random questions about bands (“You know, the secret Christian band that sings ‘We were meant to live for so much more!’ Answer: Switchfoot) but for the final question, two movie posters popped up on the screen. On the left was The Fast and the Furious. On the right was its sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious. Underneath it said, “The first had this, the second didn’t.”

Hmmm…. I had to think about this. The first had something that the second had…

Well, the first one had Vin Diesel, and the second didn’t.

Vin Diesel…

diesel…

The answer came to me in a flash, and I typed it into the computer:

“UNLEADED”.

DING DING DING!! I win!!!

It *almost* makes sense but at the same time makes no sense at all.

A plea for those of you in readerLand who are masters of identifying song lyrics. Can you pick out the lyrics of the second line of this clip? It’s from Hot Hot Heat’s new single, “Goodnight Goodnight.”

Edit: Thanks to Yar, whose Google skillz are apparently much more l33t than mine, I now know what it says.

[10:56] Sha Bond: so do you know what he’s saying it that part??
[10:56] Coltar: can’t oyu just look it up?
[10:56] Sha Bond: all the sites have ??? for that part
[11:01] Coltar: A little bit of rain Id say is fair,
But when it starts a thundering I’m scared.
[11:01] Sha Bond: really??
[11:01] Coltar: man
[11:01] Coltar: you didn’t really look very thoroughly did you
[11:01] Sha Bond: no :(
[11:01] Coltar: instead you spent that time putting it up on your site and clipping out the relevant part of the song
[11:01] Sha Bond: haha
[11:01] Coltar: *claps slowly*

In other randomness, yesterday I lifted weights for the first time in a reallllly long time and my arms are all sore today. :(

Lean Back

Monday, March 14th, 2005

Pretty low-key weekend. On Saturday I went to check out the Stevens Creek Trail since I told my friends I’d take them running there. I couldn’t figure out which entrance would be best, so I just went to all of them. On the way I stopped by the Hong Kong Bakery on Castro and bought some pork buns and shrimp dumplings and ate them on the trail. Mmm… While I was at the southern end of the trail, I passed by a little league game and took some photos. The kids were really cute, but I decided I never want to be a little league coach. It must be like herding around a bunch of monkeys with ADD.

Afterwards I headed home and watched The Pianist which was very good. It’s sometimes easy to forget that these things actually happened, and not even that long ago. It’s really shocking to realize what depths humans are capable of, and at the same time their resilience. Pretty amazing.

In the evening I had dinner with Buddy, Marc, and Jess at Pasta Pomodoro and then it was back to Buddy’s house to watch Daredevil which was as bad as everyone says it was. Seriously. This is coming from me, who didn’t think Alien vs. Predator was all that bad. The story was bad, the acting was bad, the special effects were bad… And not so bad that they were good, just plain bad. I’m glad I borrowed it from work for free, because I might have been forced to fly into a Hulk-like rage if I had actually spent money on it.

Sunday morning was the run and dim-sum, and afterwards I hung out with May Ling for a while. After that I went to Red Lobster for Brendan’s birthday dinner, and then to Dave & Buster’s.

Things at work have been a little busy, and I ended up staying until 9 today. I’m already looking forward to the weekend…is that a bad sign? :)

On the Road Again

Monday, March 14th, 2005

Yesterday I took May Ling, Babs, and Buddy for a run on the Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View. It was my first run since the marathon, and it felt great to be out moving again. May Ling and I did a 5:1 the whole way (Babs and Buddy were just behind us) and we ended up doing somewhere between 6.5 – 7 miles! Mad props to May Ling and Babs since it was the longest run they’ve ever done. Woo! I had some IT-band tightness, but no full-blown pain, which I’ll take as a good sign.

Current fundraising amount: $4918

Climbing for a Cure

Monday, March 14th, 2005

Yesterday I was at a Dim Sum restaurant with May Ling, Babs, and Buddy after we had gone running on the Stevens Creek Trail. I was still wearing my “Run Against Bush” shirt, and an older Chinese woman approached me and asked where she could get one. We started chatting and she told me that her son was leading an expedition to Mount Everest to raise awareness for breast cancer (his sister had died of a rare form of cancer.) She told me about his website, Climbing for a Cure, so I visited and read about their expedition. Wanting to help, I donated a bit of money, and also e-mailed the expedition leader to tell him about how I had met his mother that morning. I also told him how two of my aunts as well as Aunt Ruth had all battled breast cancer. He wrote me back and asked for their initials, and told me that he would put them on one of their summit flags. So once they make it to the top (which should be in the spring of this year) their initials will be at the top of Mount Everest! Neat!
