I’m a Sad Panda

Friday, January 28th, 2005

At work my team has a deadline coming up next week, so we’ve all been working late to try to get things done. On Monday I stayed until 10:30pm, Tuesday until 11:45pm, and Wednesday until 11:15pm. Last night, however, I had important business to attend to so I needed to leave by 8:30. That morning I was thinking to myself, “Hmm… maybe I should e-mail my lead engineer to let him know that I’ll be leaving early.”

…And then I mentally slapped myself and remembered that 8:30 is not “early.” So I said “Screw you guys, I’m going home!” and left without e-mailing.

Sad.

Ski Trip 2005

Friday, January 21st, 2005

[Edited 1/23/05 with some stuff I forgot.]

This past weekend, a whole mess of us went up to Tahoe for Ski Trip ’05, organized by Walter [cue theme song]. Having not been to Tahoe for a full year, I was really excited about the trip not only to go snowboarding, but also to test out my car’s swanky AWD system. I probably went a little nuts preparing my car for the trip. I got a ski/snowboard roof rack, all-weather floor mats, jumper cables, and I borrowed tire cables from someone at work.

Friday

We left Friday afternoon from EA. I drove up Buddy, Nigel, and Jianbo. Lesson number one was that my car, despite being a wagon, has very little cargo room. We ended up packing the back completely full, and Nigel and Jianbo still had to keep some of their stuff in the back seat. The drive was pretty uneventful until we reached the 80, at which point we reached some pretty Ass traffic. It was stop and go for an hour at least, so we decided to stop off for a healthy Jack in the Box dinner. We continued on after a while, and I got a little anxious as we approached the mountain-y section of the 50. To my disappointment, there was literally zero snow on the ground. While this is Good Thing in the “safety” sense, it was Very Sad Thing in the “Sha Sha wants to try out her awesome new car” sense. C’est la vie. We finally made it to the cabin after about 6 hours. I was tired so I crashed pretty early. But not before Eric and I nearly beat Buddy at Scrabble. We totally would have beat him if he would have let us put “cornbeaks.” Totally a word. Later that night, Cheryl got into bed, and apparently our conversation went something like this:

[Sha Sha wakes up, looks at clock, and sees that it is 4 a.m.]
Sha Sha: What have you been doing?
Cheryl: Talking to people.
Sha Sha: Why? You weren’t talking to me, and I’m the only interesting one here.

Ah, sleepy conversations.

Saturday

Wanting to get a full day’s worth of snowboarding in, I woke Buddy up at around 7:30 a.m. and got dressed. Babs’ high school friends Nicole and Sirena also joined us. After Nicole and Buddy got their rental gear at the lodge, we hopped on the shuttle to Heavenly. It’s a good thing we got our lift tickets and rental gear before hand, because the lines there were insane.

We started out on the bunny slope, and it took a while for me to find my…snow legs. But after a bit, I started to get a feel for snowboarding again. Nicole and Sirena split off from Buddy and me to go on some of the harder slopes, and Buddy and I stuck to the bunny slope for a couple more runs. After a bit, we headed up the lift to another section with a few green runs, and this is where I started to fall a lot. I was attempting to do faster, tighter turns, and although this was occasionally successful, it was also occasionally very, very painful. I had a couple really hard falls on my back, and I’m fairly certain I might have given myself minor whiplash.

After meeting up with Nicole and Sirena around lunchtime, we all headed to the very top of the mountain and took a really nice blue run down the side. Nicole and Sirena split off again, and Buddy and I headed up to the top again to take that same run down. Around this time, the fatigue really started to hit me, and I started to fall even more. Towards the end of the run, I was just sliding down on my heel edge, hoping to make it down in one piece. It was a bit frustrating to fall so much, as I was hoping I would noticeably improve over the last time I went. Hopefully I’ll be able to make it up once more this season and try to work on it some more.

That morning, Walter had put the first of the turduckens in the oven, and the people who didn’t go to the slopes kept an eye on it throughout the day. It was done right around dinnertime, so we all partook in the gloriousness of a chicken < duck < turkey. After dinner it was a brief celebration for Mike's birthday, then Taboo ("um, this is a two part word, and the first part is....pubic lice." [the word was 'crabgrass'.]), video games, and lots and lots of Karaoke Revolution.

Sunday

I had originally been planning on going snowboarding on Sunday as well, but the combination of Xtreme Soreness and a fear of injuring myself kept me away. Instead, I joined everyone for brunch at a diner place next door, then spent the rest of the day just hanging out. Buddy and I beat Feel the Magic on my DS that I bought off a guy at work. I also started The Urbz, and gots me some xizzle beads. Yeah, I don’t know what that means either. I also read a little and chatted with friends. Later we watched Napoleon Dynamite again, and I have to say that it was funnier the second time. Yessssss…. In the afternoon Crystal, Peter, and I made an awesome snowman with the expert assistance of Nicole. We eventually added a pine needle wreath, completing his transformation into Snow Caesar. Unfortunately, Snow Caesar was killed by an unknown assailant a few hours later. Snow Brutus, perhaps? That night, those of us who were still around headed to a local pizza place for dinner. After dinner, we played Trivial Pursuit 90′s Edition, which I thought was way too easy. Fortunately, we still won. I’m actually glad that I didn’t go snowboarding because it was nice to have a chance to just relax for a day.

Monday

We left around 8:30am so we could get back early. The drive back was much nicer and quicker than the drive up, and I even got to try the famous Del Taco. Conclusion: it tastes a lot like Taco Bell, but it’s cheaper. It’s a win-win situation!

We got back to EA at around 1:30pm, dropped off Nigel, then it was back up to Foster City for a leisurely 14-mile run along the Bay Trail.

All in all, I had a great time on the trip. Thanks again to Walter for putting it all together!

Bay Trail

Friday, January 21st, 2005

Since Buddy and I missed our 23-mile run this past weekend, we did our own 14-mile run along the Bay Trail after getting back from Tahoe. Although it wasn’t 23 miles, even I was impressed by the fact that I could run 14 miles on 6 hours sleep after a 5 hour drive, and with 4 Del Taco tacos in my tummy. Boo yah.

This Dream Was Brought to You By…

Wednesday, January 12th, 2005

Two nights ago I had a very strange dream. I had been kidnapped by some Made Up Dream Guy, and was sitting on the couch in what I presume was his home or hideout or something. He then put the end of a length of tubing underneath my nose which released gas and made me pass out. This was strange because I was, you know, already sleeping. Anyway, eventually I woke back up and came up with a clever plan to escape. I put the tube underneath his nose to make him pass out. After a couple minutes he did, but my ultra-clever plan was foiled when I saw a previously-unnoticed second Made Up Dream Kidnapper Guy staring at me. I decided to come up with an alternate plan and told him that I had to go to the bathroom. When I went into the next room, who should I see sitting there? None other than May Ling.

“May Ling!” I said, “Call for help!”
“I can’t,” she replied. “I don’t have reception.”
“I do; I have Verizon!”

….

EH??? Since when did my dreams become commercials for cell phone carriers? So sad.

Tsunami Relief

Friday, January 7th, 2005

[Cross posted on my main website]

For those of you who have not yet donated to my marathon, seeing as I have already surpassed my fundraising goal, I ask you to consider donating to one of the many Tsumani Relief funds instead. It’s hard to say that one cause is worthier than another, but I think it’s clear that there is a more immediate need for donations towards relief for countries affected by the earthquake and tsunami disasters.

On the left is a short list of some relief organizations.

Update

Thursday, January 6th, 2005

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve updated. Nice to see all 3 of you again.

Since the 20-miler, I’ve been taking it pretty light on the running front. I left for Albuquerque later that week, so I missed the training run. While in Albuquerque, I tried to run a bit. “Tried” being the operative word. Because of the extreme altitude difference (Albuquerque’s altitude is 5,326 feet, San Francisco’s is 128 feet), I made it literally about 10 minutes before running out of breath. It was very very sad. I made myself feel better by gorging myself and not running for the rest of break.

Two days after I got back, we had a short 8-miler in Berkeley. I had yet to do any runs at that training site, so I was interested to see how it was. Well, it was freezing. It rained the entire time and was quite windy as well. I couldn’t feel my fingers for the first few miles. My group made up for it by running really fast. We ended up being the second group to finish, about 5 minutes ahead of our pace. Oops.

This week we have a 23-mile training run, so I’ve been taking it easy and doing my maintainence runs on the treadmill at work. I’ve sort of resigned myself to the fact that my knee pain may just be something I have to deal with. Although it hasn’t gotten worse, it hasn’t really gotten better either, and I do still have pain when I run. I’m confident, though, that I’ll be able to run the marathon, and hopefully I’ll be able to do more after this one. :)

There’s No Place Like…

Thursday, January 6th, 2005

As most of y’all know, I spent the holidays at home in Albuquerque. My parents had been living elsewhere for the past few years, so it was my first time home in 3 1/2 years. I was really looking forward to the visit for two reasons: friends and food. An unbeatable combination.

As the plane descended into the Albuquerque Airport, sorry, the Albuquerque Sunport, one thought went through my mind: Albuquerque is dumpy. This is not something that I noticed while growing up there, but having been away for a few years (and especially in contrast to where I live now) really made me realize that the city is kind of a dump. Driving down Central (which is, incidentally, part of Route 66) from the airport to my house, everything was brown, the buildings were old, and the city itself just looked tired. It didn’t help that there are four, yes four, Pussycat adult video stores along the 20 minute drive. (Oh man, I may regret typing that sentence here. Google don’t fail me!)

When I got home, I was stuck with that weird feeling that everything was very different but at the same time very much the same. There were the same streets, the same houses, but also a few new houses, or maybe a different paint color on an old one. My room in our house had been completely emptied and converted into a guest room, with all of my belongings from the first 20-some years of my life neatly packed away into boxes in the garage.

I spent most of the break seeing old friends. I alway like to tell people that the great thing about my friends back at home is that no matter how long it’s been since we’ve seen each other, when we get together it’s like no time has passed. But this time, things had changed. Not for the worse, mind you, but despite our best efforts at acting like we were still in high school, the way we interacted had subtly changed. We’ve all had sort of a strange few years and I think it’s forced us to grow up a little. Hard to believe, I know. :)

I think I may have reached that point that I suppose everyone eventually reaches when you realize that your home is not home anymore. Sure it’s a place to relax and have fun, but it doesn’t quite feel like I belong there.

Reading this you may think that I didn’t enjoy my time there, but that’s not true. I saw Nathaniel, Marsha, Christine, Caitlin, and Jennifer (the latter 3 whom I haven’t seen since 2001), plus the McCampbells (the OG best friends), the Shagams, and Aunt Ruth‘s husband Martin. I had lots of yummy Albuquerque-only food like Frontier, Dion’s (which was robbed right before I met Jennifer there), Bob’s Burgers, and Little Anitas. I visited old places like the Natural History Museum and the Outpost Skating Rink (though it turns out the owner of the Outpost received an award for “Businessman of the Year” from the Republican Party…*shudder*). I actually had a great time. It was good to be home…er, good to be in Albuquerque.

P.S. While there, Nathaniel and I came up with a new word: New Mexibling. Don’t know what it is? Some examples:
[New Mexibling 1] [New Mexibling 2] [New Mexibling 3].
I think you get the idea. I’ve decided I want a necklace with my name spelled out in turquoise. That would be hard core.
