Woohoo!

Monday, January 27th, 2003

I just submitted my CS223b problem set! Yaaaaaaay!

Also, for any of you who watch Alias, wasn’t tonight’s episode wacky? I didn’t think it was particularly good, but a lot of weird stuff happened. I also feel a little disturbed that I laughed out loud at the last scene. If nothing else, though, I’m interested to see where they take this storyline. It’s a shame that the Superbowl post-game stuff ran so long, because I think part of what ABC was hoping to do was to draw in new viewers by putting it right after the Superbowl. But at least here, it was probably close to an hour before it actually aired. Anyway, if any of you don’t watch, the next new episode would be a good place to start, since all the wackiness of today hopefully made some of the confusing-ness go away, too.

You can check out any time you like…

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

Does anyone else find the song “Hotel California” really, really creepy? I’m not even sure what it’s about, but every time I hear it, I get a little nervous.

Other than being creeped out by music, I’ve spent the majority of today working on one part of one problem of my CS223b problem set. Woohoo. I did take a break to have dinner from “bueno bueno burritoria” with Camila and Ryan. The burrito was indeed “bueno bueno.”

Anyway, I wanted to see if I could catch the Superbowl tomorrow, but based on how this problem set is going, that ain’t gonna happen.

I Am Rubber and You Are Glue…

I’ve been called many things: an idiot (twice), an ass wipe, and dumb, but I do believe this is the first time I’ve been called a decrepit old man. Isn’t the internet fun?

Things I Want To Do

Friday, January 24th, 2003

This is more of a list for myself because of my extremely short-term memory, but in case any of you are interested, these are some Things I Want To Do:

1) Write a photomosaic generating program (I’ve pretty much worked it out in my head.)
2) Finish my Wallace Maya model
3) Get scuba certified
4) Take a photography class
5) Start running again
6) Write a song (No, I’m not having sudden delusions of pop stardom, but over winter break, I was writing a song in my head as I was falling asleep one night, but in the morning, I couldn’t remember it. All I remember was that I had titled it “Every Day” and that it was a heckuva lot better than that crap-job Dave Matthews song.)
7) Buy a better digital camera
8) Take a drawing class

It’s good to see I have such inconsequential aspirations.

Edit 5/22/09: Updated with goals I’ve achieved!

Size Does Matter

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2003

Over winter break I realized that I needed pants, so I went to the mall with my parents to buy a few new pairs. Last quarter I discovered that Levis no longer makes my beloved 517s, so I decided to venture out into the world of Other Pants Companies. The first store I tried was JCrew, where I picked out a couple of pairs of size 4 pants to try on. The saleswoman who was helping me saw that I picked out size 4 said, “Oh, those are going to be way too big.” Skeptical, I tried on the size 4s anyway, and discovered that they were indeed way too big. So I tried on some size 2s, and they were also too big. I even tried on a size 0, which was, thankfully, a bit too small. Confused, I headed over to the tried-and-trusted Gap, and did find some size 4s that fit. This was good news, until I realized that back in high school when I was at least 15 pounds lighter, I also wore a size 4. I realized that this is part of a very disturbing trend of slowly making women’s sizes larger, most likely to drive down the average size, and in some twisted way, to make women feel better about themselves. But it’s no wonder that so many girls here have eating disorders and body image issues, when they see that everyone around them is running around in a size 4. A friend of mine once pointed out that at the height of her fame, Marilyn Monroe had the world in the palm of her hand, but if she were modeling today, the only place she would be able to find work would be in “plus” sizes. What a messed up country this is.

And the award goes to…

XTheDarkEmperorx for the following mind-blowing comment:

CATHRINE ZETA-JONES IS THE BEST FINEST ACTRESS ASIDE FROM BERRYMORE. CATHEINE’S PROFESSIONAL ACTING GOES GREAT WITH THE LAME MOVING AND TWITCHING.

Commentation

Monday, January 20th, 2003

I didn’t feel right lumping this along with my previous post.

Anyway, I’m quite pleased that many people (other than those related to me) have been leaving comments on my site. Most of them seem to relate to Catherine Zeta-Jones or Dell Interns, both of which seem to have a very sensitive and fanatical following.

They range from stunning feats of logic:

“HEY HEY! NOTHING IS STUPID WHEN CATHERINE ZETA JONES IS IN IT! SHE IS THE BEST AND THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN THE WORLD! SHE MAKES EVERYTHING LOOK GOOD, HENCE I LOOK LIKE HER!”

to somewhat garbled:

i was in that commercial, lol the bowling one……and ur dumb kid the whole idea is that it isnt supposed to be REAL in that the blinking of the eyes i what they were looking for….if u notice, the guy with spikey hair, his name is mark, is holding the bowling ball and is very shaky, lol…..thats because he did that shot like 15 times and his arms were exhausted……lol, catherine was hot

to the downright eloquent:

“You idiot asshole. Get that shit off your webpage, i’m looking for dell interns!!!!!”

I’d like to point out that this is the second time I’ve been called an idiot by a complete stranger. Ah, it’s good to be alive.

Coincidence

Monday, January 20th, 2003

Yesterday Domi asked me if I had ever heard of the singer Vienna Teng. The name was vaguely familiar to me, and Domi told me that she thought I might like her, since she’s sort of similar to the Sarah McLachlan/Tori Amos/Norah Jones/Girl With Piano music that she knows I like. So she pointed me to her website (http://www.viennateng.com/) and I realized that Vienna was in my Chinese class my sophomore year. Reading up about her, she graduated from Stanford in 2000, took a job with Cisco, then quit about a year ago to pursue music. She’s apparently doing really well, since she’s going to be on The Late Show With David Letterman tonight! Domi’s coming over so we can check her out.

Upon browsing over Vienna’s website, I also re-discovered the website of Eric Cheng, who was in the Stanford Symphony Orchestra at the same time I was oh-so-many years ago. He’s another one of those people with Objectively More Interesting Lives than mine. His website is worth a visit; he has a lot of journals from his many world travels, as well as some really nice underwater photographs. Maybe if I get rich, I’ll try my hand at that someday, too.

Anyway, it was nice to happen upon these people again, and see how they’ve accomplished so much more than I have. Aw, yeah.

Boarding, Buffets, and Burritos

Wednesday, January 15th, 2003

Well, it’s been quite a while since I updated this page. Last weekend, a bunch of us went up to Tahoe for the weekend. Other than the fact that I forgot my camera (an unpardonable sin, I know,) it was a great time. I somehow volunteered myself as a driver, and increased my blood pressure a bit by driving on snowy roads in the dark, but thankfully we had walkie-talkies to pass the time, and got to the cabin around 10:30 pm Friday night. There were 11 of us in a nice 3-story town home, so there was plenty of room for everyone, unlike many dorm ski trips of yore. Most of Friday night (and some of Saturday morning) was spent playing video games. You can take the geek out of Stanford, but you can’t take the…. whatever. We’re geeks.

Saturday morning, I decided I wanted to get to the slopes early, so I set the alarm in the room for 8 am. When it went off, I got ready to go, and unsuccessfully tried to wake up some other people. Around 8:30, I realized the alarm clock was 20 minutes fast, so I stopped trying to wake up people and sat around, twiddling my proverbial thumbs until I couldn’t contain myself anymore. Mariel and I got out to the slopes around 10:30, and I had a great day snowboarding. Thanks to my limited skateboarding skills, sorry, skillz, I can get off the lift with not too much trouble, and I was also learning to carve. I was just sorry we only got to go to the slopes for one day. Later that night, I went with Mariel, Matt, Brendan, and Mike to The Horizon casino, and dropped $12 on a buffet, and $30 on the slots. Brendan, in his eternal scheme to take the casinos, won some money on video blackjack. Matt and Mike also lost, and Mariel broke even. Later that night, we had a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit, where we somehow lost to the Drunk Team. I blame the cards.

The drive back home Sunday morning was pretty uneventful, but we did discover a bizarre Taco Bell that had drive-through only until 1 pm. The things you can learn.

That was probably the most exciting thing that happened lately. My classes have been going fine so far, seeing as I haven’t yet gotten any assignments. I predict the slow spiral into despair will begin soon enough. I can’t wait.

Back in Cali

Monday, January 6th, 2003

Hey all two of my readers. I’m back at school now (I actually got back yesterday). My flight from Baltimore to LA was an interesting one. I was sitting next to a Mary Kay lady (who gave me some samples) and an actress, who has had bit parts in some TV show, and is hoping to get a lead in a new series this coming season. Their conversations consisted of an odd mixture of name dropping, self ego stroking (“I’m very funny!”), and discussion of skin care products. It certainly helped pass the hours. The Mary Kay lady seemed quite baffled when I told her that I wanted to work at a video game company, and I think it’s because she thought I meant I wanted to work at a video store (her words) like Blockbuster. Which could very well happen, given the current direction of the economy.

Since I’ve been back, I’ve cleaned the kitchen, haphazardly chosen my classes, and watched Notorious C.H.O., which was hilarious, if not really raunchy. I like to think it was a last laugh before the onslaught of CS classes that is sure to pound my GPA this quarter. Good times.

I’ll try to get my pictures up soon, which I’m sure you all have been waiting for all break. (Pictures? What pictures?)

Finally, I want to pass on this link that my sister e-mailed to me: Japander.com. See all your favorite stars in bizarre Japanese commercials! A good time is guaranteed.
