Say Cheese!

Tuesday, December 10th, 2002

I think that I have an unconscious phobia of missing taking pictures of important events. Last week I had a dream that I was in a coffee house with the members of U2. A few of us were just sort of hanging out and chatting with them, when my Imaginary Dream Friend and I decide it would be a cool idea to get a picture with U2. So I hand my Other Imaginary Dream Friend my camera and we go stand by U2. A whole bunch of people start taking pictures, and I can see my Other Imaginary Dream Friend struggling to see over all the people taking pictures. Eventually, The Edge gets frustrated and leaves, and my picture never gets taken.

Then two days ago, I dreamt I was walking with a friend near a zoo when I notice that one of the fences has a hole in it. A baby goat squeezes through the hole, so I pick it up and carry it around. It is very cute and fuzzy and full of baby animal goodness, so I ask my friend to take my picture with it. For some reason, she can’t take the picture, so she gives up and I have to return the baby goat to the zoo, sans cute baby goat picture.

So the moral of the story is, if I ask you to take my picture, for you own good and mine, please do it.

In unrelated news, this is my webpage’s 100th post! Woohoo! What’s someone called who is 100 years old? I wanted to title this post Sha Sha the Centurion, but when I looked that up on dictionary.com, I discovered that a centurion is the commander of a century in the Roman army. As cool as that would be, I didn’t want anyone to think that I had run off to compete in chariot races or anything like that.

Finally, I was referenced in an online article! A writer for the SANS Institute (SysAdmin, Audit, Network, and Security) referenced a project on computer viruses that I had worked on for CS201 a couple of years ago. Although I’m flattered that he appreciated my description of polymorphic viruses, it makes me a little wary of the SANS Institute, seeing as they quoted a college student.

So Very Very Cool

Saturday, December 7th, 2002

You’ll notice that over on the right of the page, I’ve added a little box for the 5 most recent comments posted on my page. You’ll also notice that yesterday I received the following comment about my post describing my annoyance with the Catherine Zeta-Jones T-Mobile commercials:

“. . . BTW you people have nothing better to than to post petty criticisms about dopey commercials?

How cool is that?”

I’ve always found it odd that people take it upon themselves to visit a website, and insult the maker of it. It’s one thing to disagree with what was said, but it’s something completely different to call the writer names. I figure that you can either come here and enjoy what you read, or come here, hate it, and leave. Nobody’s forcing you to read this page, and I sure as tootin’ heck don’t owe you anything.

This is the second negative comment I’ve received about that particular post. Who knew that so many people were so sensitive over Catherine Zeta-Jones. Maybe they’re just testy about the fact that she chose a crusty old man over their 300-pound, oh-so-bitter, using-my-roommate’s-computer-to-look-up-porn, monitor-tanned selves.

Anyway, I was all ready to write a response noting that he apparently has nothing better to do than sit around at a computer (grdmac6.ucsd.edu) at UCSD, search for “zeta commercials” on Yahoo, and make petty criticisms about petty criticisms about dopey commercials, but… oops. Just did.

Happy Birthday to…dammit

Friday, December 6th, 2002

Well, I was all ready to say a happy birthday to Peter, but seeing as it’s 12:26 a.m., it’s no longer his birthday. Scratch that plan. So, happy day-after-your-birthday Peter! Last night Florence threw a semi-surprise birthday party for him, complete with video games, food, two (two!!!) ice cream cakes from Rick’s, music, and condescending law students. Law students you say? Yes, well shortly after midnight the girls living above Peter’s apartment came down to complain about the noise (which honestly, there was very little of) and proceeded to tell us that they were law students. Why that particular piece of information was necessary, I’m not sure. I told Peter afterwards that he should have told them that it was his last party before his heart transplant. That would have shut them up. Probably. Other than that, much fun was had, and mad props to Florence for organizing it.

Tonight we had Jen and Jenny over for dinner. We made French onion soup and pounded chicken. Pounded chicken isn’t really the name of the dish, but that’s what my mom calls it. They seemed to like it. Then it was good ol’ Must-See TV, and off to have some Pearl Milk Tea. It wasn’t exactly a study-friendly night, but it was a good break.

Mariel and I also discovered we have ants in our kitchen. This brought back flashbacks of Kimball, so we busted out the ant baits and hopefully they’ll be gone soon. Just like the law students.

I was RCC in a dorm for 1 year and 1 summer a couple of years ago. I did my best to be involved-staff-person-girl, being enthusiastic and supportive of our much-too-large staff and dorm. This usually involved trying to get people to go to the various dorm events. Usually I had a reasonable amount of success, but every once in a while, there were those couple of people who just refused to do anything, if they even acknowledged your existence. You would go into their room and try to be excited but not to a frightening level, but no amout of bribery, threat, or sweet-talking would get them to budge. I would leave their room, disappointed at their lack of enthusiasm for contrived dorm unity. Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I was throwing away another flier for a Rains events when it hit me: I’m that person! I’m the person who doesn’t go to any events, who throws away fliers, and who doesn’t answer when the CAs knock on the door (true story.) When did this happen? When did I become so apathetic?

Probably about the time when I STOPPED CARING. HAHAHA!

Anyway…

I spent the greater part of last night in stinky, stinky Sweet Hall working on an EE282 problem set, and the greater part of today working on a CS242 problem set. The good news is, I only have one more assignment left before finals. Woo and hoo.

Finally, I took the survey at Find Your Spot, which is supposed to tell me the place I should live. My results are:

1) Seattle, WA
2) Colorado Spring, CO
3) Denver, CO
4) Salt Lake City, UT (Please no)
5) Cincinatti, OH
6) Tulsa, OK
7) Loveland, CO
8) Grand Junction, CO
9) Provo-Orem, UT (huh??)
10) Boise, ID (Ugh)
11) Carlisle, PA
12) Kent, WA
13) Fort Collins, CO
14) Bremerton, WA
15) Idaho Falls, ID
16) Tacoma, WA
17) Norfolk, VA
18) St Louis, MO
19) Bellingham, WA
20) Asheville, NC
21) Charlotte, NC
22) Long Island, NY
23) Louisville, KY
24) Richmond, VA

Not exactly what I was expecting… Apparently it really really wants me to live in Colorado. All I said was that I like snow!! Is that so wrong???

Thanksgiving in Carmel

Monday, December 2nd, 2002

I’m back! Did you miss me? Didn’t think so. I actually got back Saturday afternoon, but I’ve been oddly busy since then, so I didn’t get a chance to post until now. We all had a great time in Carmel, as usual, with a lot of eating, sleeping, but mostly eating. As always, the food was fantastic: mashed potatos, sweet potatos, creamed onions, mashed parsnips and carrots, two kinds of stuffing, green beans, and a 20+ pound turkey. I think I was perpetually full from Thursday evening until Saturday afternoon. We spent most of our time at Bill and Lillian’s house, meeting their friends and relatives. Uncle Bill’s family is probably the nicest group of people I’ve ever met; his parents must have really done something right.

On Friday, Julie and Mariel and I walked from Fisherman’s Wharf in Carmel to Pacific Grove, which is the next city over. We pretended that we were “working off Thanksgiving dinner,” but really we were just trying to make room for dinner that night.

On Saturday, we had breakfast at Em Le’s (which I discovered used to be owned by John Madden) and then walked a bit around Carmel before heading back to campus. Since then, it’s been EE282 problem sets, work for Marc, and other not-as-fun things.

Seeing as the number of posts I do usually increases proportionally to the amount of work I should be doing, I project that in the next two weeks, I’ll be posting about 18,000 times. Look forward to it.

Oh, and here are pictures of the weekend in Carmel.
