Astrophysics and Amstel

Monday, May 27th, 2002

Yar recently sent me a link to a story about the possibility of sending people through wormholes. It’s a neat idea, but they add this little disclaimer:

“It would be a delicate operation, however. Add too much negative energy, the scientists discovered, and the wormhole will briefly explode into a new universe that expands at the speed of light, much as astrophysicists say ours did immediately after the big bang . . . To keep the wormhole open wide enough would take a negative field equivalent to the energy that would be liberated by converting the mass of Jupiter.”

I came to the conclusion that physicists are bored and have nothing left to do, so i think they’re just starting to make things up now.
They come up with things like this and then always keep them theoretical by saying it would require more energy than is in the entire universe or something. That way they never actually have to do anything, they just sit around in their labs all day and drink beer.

Tricks of the Trade

Monday, May 27th, 2002

I recently happened upon a Photoshop trick where you can make parts of an image grayscale, and parts of it color, making for some artistic (or pseudo-artistic, in my case) photographs. Here and here are the results of my first two experiments with the method.

[Edit: It appears that the original Noah Grey link is no longer functioning, so here is another description of the method.]

On a completely unrelated but equally geeky note, I am currently obsessed with pixel fonts, which are (as explained by Webpage Design for Designers) “designed especially for screen resolutions and every stroke and dot falls exactly within a ’tile’ of the screen’s tiny mosaic. So, even at very small sizes, they look crisp and clear. Their shapes avoid curves preferring instead to lie along horizontal and vertical lines as much as possible.” In otherwords, really clean fonts specifically for the web. Woo and hoo.
Here are some samples:
pixel-y goodness...
Just tell me they aren’t cool. No, on second thought, don’t.

Perspective, Part 3

Monday, May 20th, 2002

I’d also like to point out that all three links to the right, which used to be for donating money for victims of the September 11 attacks, no longer work. Obviously this is because nearly 9 months have passed, which clearly this means that everybody is just peachy keen and nobody needs our help anymore.

So did you see what Britney was wearing the other day?

My Life in Brief

Monday, May 20th, 2002

Hmm… So I haven’t updated this page in a couple of months, and I’m sure lots of exciting things have happened in the meantime, but I’m having trouble recalling all of them. Here’s what I do remember:

1) Spring break in LA (pictures coming soon)
2) Myra coming to visit
3) Waiting in line for 6 hours to see the 12:01 a.m. showing of Star Wars. [pic]
4) AASA Fashion Show (pictures here)
5) Mariel’s Birthday dinner (pictures here)

Now, I’m pretty sure that there was more inbetween 2 and 3, but compared to Star Wars, is anything really that important?

OH… wait.

2.37) Getting a free trip to SIGGRAPH for working on the Cartoon Capture video for Lorie and Chris.
2.5) Getting a job offer to work at Electronic Arts for the summer as a software engineering intern on Knockout Kings.

Those were pretty cool too, but they didn’t involve lightsabers.

And something not so cool:
2.45) Getting my results back from donating blood and discovering that my cholesterol level is 218.
2.49) Starting to run around 2 miles 4 times a week.

However, numbers 2.49 and 3 were a bit mutually exclusive, seeing as I had to plan my week around having my entire wednesday evening free, leaving me sleepless and stressed for all nights previous.

2.51) Buying Ben Kweller’s album Sha Sha.

Now, my life must seem pretty trivial, only because it is.

Boo yah.
